‘Riverdale’ Star Mark Conseulos Says Hiram Lodge Only ‘Wants What’s Best’ for Veronica

If you’re a Riverdale fan, you must know that the parents on the show don’t have typical relationships with their kids. If anything, often times, the parental authorities are made to be antagonists. Ahem, we’re looking at you Clifford Blossom and Hal Cooper. However, believe it or not, there are still some parents who genuinely care about their children, including Hiram Lodge, who is played by Mark Consuelos.

Hiram has always been known to be the bad guy, even before we he was officially introduced in season 2. According to Mark, though, there’s still some good in him, especially when it comes to his daughter, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and we’re going to see some of that in season 4.

“[Hiram] gets involved in so many decisions in her life, I think that’s probably one of the places that he will try to control as well,” Mark exclusively told Life & Style at New York Comic Con. “He doesn’t want to lose his daughter; he wants what’s best for her. That’s gonna be a big moment when she goes off.” Veronica will soon graduate high school and head to college, which will make it hard for Hiram to keep tabs on her — or so we think.

Toward the end of season 3, viewers saw that Hiram went to prison. However, it isn’t your typical prison. In this case, Hiram owns the jail. It’s even named after him. And of course, being held captive is an advantage for the mastermind who can now work undercover.

“It’s his prison. He built it; I see it as a little bit of a vacation,” Mark continued. “He hired all of them. He trusts them. It’s pretty cushy — gives him some time to think. He does have some time to reflect, think about some of the choices he made. That’s good. Hopefully some good will come out of it.”

The 48-year-old actor is well aware that his character is a villain in the show, but he also recognizes that Hiram is capable of not being completely bad. “I think if you really look at some of the things he’s done over the past few years, they’re predominately really bad,” he added. “But he always does these little things, to protect his daughter, but also … whether or not he was at war with Fred [Andrews,] he respected Fred.”

That being said, we can’t wait to see what happens in the new season, which premieres on the CW on Wednesday, October 9, at 8 p.m. ET.
