For Rocky S, it’s been almost three decades in the fashion industry. It all started with Bollywood with a lot of learning, ups and downs, and above all, the creative satisfaction that still happens to be his driving force after doing 300 movies, hundreds of fashion shows, and endless standalone projects. As he says, “Even after so much, I feel it’s just the beginning and that’s why I keep exploring more and more every day.” From clothing, interiors, furnishing to the most recent venture of chocolates and candles, Rocky S’s list of work and achievements are endless. In an exclusive chat with TMM, he talks about everything that defines him as an iconic face of the creative world.
You’ve been doing so much — pret, couture, resort, interiors, chocolate, and whatnot. How do you create a balance?
(Laughs) In simple words, that’s me! I feel you need to keep exploring to be a better version of yourself and that is what I keep doing with every new genre I explore. While it all started with fashion, I always wanted to venture into other lifestyle aspects as well and with time I did it. The creative satisfaction and acceptance by my patrons give me that extra push to bring more and more every year. I hope and wish this will continue forever!
Bollywood and fashion are inseparable. What do you have to say?
Certainly, they are, and I have been working in the Bollywood industry for the last 25 years and I have seen these stars becoming fashion icons. From Shilpa Shetty to Hrithik Roshan, I have worked with all of them and have seen how crazily people follow their wardrobe.
What is more important for you, creativity or wearability?
I would say a blend of both. While creativity is important for my inner satisfaction, wearability is necessary for the survival of the brand. Ever since I started, the key agenda has been to strike a balance, so that people can connect with my brand and at the same time, the pride of owning art is visible in every woman’s wardrobe.
Is there any difference in the taste of clients in India and overseas?
We make universal designs and thanks to social media, the world has become a small place. People get everything everywhere and today we can sell just via Instagram and there is no need for a physical store. So, technically, there is no separate taste for people. You will get to see everything everywhere and it’s beautiful!
What’s the biggest misconception that people have about Indian fashion?
Over a period of time, I have realized that people often think that designers only make outlandish super expensive clothes that are meant for ramp. We as designers strive to create a balance between art and wearability and most of the designers in India make wearable clothes. I don’t know from where this misconception creped in, and I hope people’s perspective will change soon.
What should be the four must-have items that one should shop from Rocky S?
Well, a sari, a Rocky Star gown, and the all-new range of candles and chocolates. If you love chocolates and candles, I guess you will fall in love with the taste and details.
If not a designer, what you would have been doing?
I am a creative person and I love hospitality, so a blend of both would have been my priority for sure. Also, I love meeting new people and travel around the world to know more about culture and heritage, so all this together would have been my profession.
