The current crossovers and SUVs are gaining popularity in the market as reported in the recent Detroit Auto Show. Though Rolls-Royce has no history with SUV, the British luxury automaker is going to take advantage of the current trend of all things SUV.
Following the unveil of the new luxury Rolls’ Phantom to global critical acclaim late last year, the British luxury car manufacturer sets sight to unveil an SUV, making it the latest addition to its existing Rolls’ collection. Currently code named Cullinan, the new SUV will make a debut to potential customers in ‘closed-room’ events later this year.
Certainly not a big secret as the camouflaged version has already been spotted for testing at the most notorious racetrack at the Nürburgring in Germany to ensure its all safe and meets the desired specifications before the all-new Cullinan hits the market.
In 2016, the company has sold 4,011 cars globally and achieved its second-best result ever, but that figure dropped to a disappointing 3,362 units last year. When the new vehicle hits the market, the company’s global sales are expected to reach about 5,000 units per year.
Like Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga and Ferrari’s future SUV just to name a few, Rolls-Royce refrains from using the common terminology for its project and decides to call it a Cullinan or an “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle” instead of an SUV.
In this latest addition, the new Cullinan will retain the bespoke aluminum platform that was used for the new Rolls-Royce Phantom as well as the company’s twin-turbo V-12 engine with 563 hp that powers the Phantom.
The intake for sales will start close to the end of 2018 with deliveries commencing sometime in 2019.
