The border between West India and Canary Wharf is only a crossing the bridge away. The other side of the bridge for West India Quay have historic warehouse left from people working in the ports and sugar warehouses. The Museum of Docklands has free entry if you want to research the history of Docklands. Now amongst the bars neighbouring each other there’s one particular one you should pay attention to. Rum & Sugar resides at no 1 warehouse offering British menus and serve premium rums.
I was invited along to a bloggers event to sample the new tasting menu and do a cocktail master class. Rum & Sugar is very spacious compared to the pub/bars surrounding the area, no cramming or tip-toeing to walk past anyone to go to the toilet or the bar.
Paul the manager has been looking after Rum & Sugar for over 5 years, previously it was 1802 Bar and lounge. He recently found the super talented Joe Howley to design the menu for Rum & Sugar. Price range for the food is very reasonable, small plates from £4.50, large plates at £10-12, and desserts for £5.
Starting off with some snacks, we were given morsels of delicious tasty chilli cheese fritters with hot sauce. Wafer thin sweet potato crackers, mango and black pepper and pulled chicken twists.
The next two small plates went down well. A block of beetroot-coloured salmon, accompanied by smoked potato salad with beetroot, pickles and rum puree. The pickles were nice and sharp just how I love it.
The next dish was defiantly interesting a herb Parmesan crusted cod, red pepper ragu and peppered leek veloute delivered. Red peppers tasted tangy, and the thin parmesan crust gave a dimension of strong flavour.
Our main course was a deconstructed chicken salad. Chargrilled baby gem leaf, tomatoes, red onions slices, shallots and heaps of parmesan cheese shavings. The sweet Cajun glazed chicken was beautiful done. Chicken breast is one of the most difficult cuts to cook, and Joe did well with not overcooking the piece.
To finish off the meal, the dessert came in a form of baked chocolate ganache, part sponge part brownie with orange caramel slices, syrup, salted nut brittle and clotted cream.
Next we were taken to a bar station to shake some rum-based cocktails. With over 175 different rums, Rum & Sugar makes each common cocktail with rum. Paul has a fun teacher and you can do your own cocktail master class from £12.50 a person. There are no jiggers used here, instead, we say the bubbles out loud. We shook and made 3 different cocktails, having a laugh.
Rum & Sugar makes a great venue to go wind down for a drink and meal, there’s live entertainment on certain nights, cocktails master classes for everyone to enjoy themselves.
