Editor’s Notes: If you thought New Balance’s streak was coming to an end, you thought wrong – it looks like we’re just getting started.
Although it would be wrong to say NB is usually in the back seat when it comes to sneaker releases, 2021 has proven to be a particularly strong year for the brand. It’s hard to remember a month without a retro, exclusive, or collaboration. From Paperboy earlier in the year to a more recent WTAPS team-up and upcoming drop with The Basement, New Balance has seemingly covered all bases.
Next to step up to the plate and maintain pace is Run the Boroughs. A somewhat unexpected collaborative partner, the London-based running club has been building a community through sport since 2019, with gear supplied by NB. The close connection between the brand and club has been used to spotlight the positive impacts of running, leveling the playing field, and making it feel more accessible to all.
Organically, this has led to the creation of the Run the Boroughs New Balance 991 in conjunction with and celebration of the Virgin Money London Marathon. Pulling inspiration from London’s dark concrete roads and typically rainy conditions, the silhouette offers a blue-tinted remix of the classic greyscale coloring we’ve come to know and love on the 990x series.
In the spirit of all things running and community, Run The Boroughs is hosting a competition via their Instagram page for 10 winners to earn a pair of the 991’s by joining the RTB crew on a run through East London.
