Watch the precinct for art and culture, Bras Basah Bugis, light up again this year, as Singapore’s largest outdoor performing arts festival returns for its 11th edition. Themed Bring on the Night, the festivities will kick off with night light installments by local and international artists. There will also be three days of thrilling performances — from larger-than-life ethereal horses prancing around to the backdrop of original melodies, to a duel that sends bolts of electricity flying through the air.

Throughout the nine nights, be sure to also head to the National Design Centre to check out the eight past finalist creations, including the first shortlisted entry from Singapore called Life Pulse (Biological Micro-universe), of the World of WearableArt, an internationally renowned New Zealand-based design competition partnering for the first time with the Singapore Night Festival. Its alumni include the likes of Maria Tsopanaki and Dimitri Mavinis — designers for Lady Gaga and Jessie J — so you know it’s going to be phenomenal.

Dick Lee

Singapopera

August 25-26

You’ve probably had this jingle stuck in your head before: “Fried rice paradise, nasi goreng very nice. That’s her speciality; 99 varieties.” Relive Dick Lee’s catchy and memorable musical tunes at Singapopera, with songs from shows like Fried Rice Paradise as well as Beauty World — which celebrates its 30th anniversary and the nation’s most successful Chinese musical, Snow.Wolf.Lake, turning 20 this year.

Taking place at the Esplanade Concert Hall for two evenings only, the concert will feature a cast of eight great musical talents of today, namely jazz powerhouse Alemay Fernandez, Broadway Beng‘s Sebastian Tan and actor-writer Dwayne Lau. They will all be accompanied by Dick Lee, on piano, and a nine-piece band, with musical direction by Indra Ismail.

Starting this month, you can now step into 1930s-1970s Singapore with National Gallery Singapore as the museum presents its latest exhibition, Lim Cheng Hoe: Painting Singapore. Comprising over 60 works of Singapore’s leading plein-air (outdoors) watercolourist Lim Cheng Hoe, the exhibition brings visitors into the mind of the late artist through the lens of his diaries, to understand his thoughts that inform his paintings. Many of his works were preoccupied with depicting the transient effects of light and weather on landscapes of Singapore.

Though the settings Lim captured have mostly vanished today. He wrote in a 1970 diary entry, about the rapidly changing landscape: The thatched attap Malay huts in Bedok that he liked to paint were being replaced with aluminium-roofed houses. In later works, Lim captured the modernisation and urbanisation of Singapore, with scenes of half-finished housing and high-rise buildings.
