Skin Check-In With Dr. Will: An Expert Analyzes Kylie Jenner’s ‘Everyday Skincare Routine’

Welcome to your skin check-in with Life & Style’s health and beauty expert, Dr. Will Kirby, a celebrity dermatologist and the Chief Medical Officer of LaserAway. Every week, he’ll be spilling his candid thoughts and professional advice on all things skin, beauty and wellness as it relates to you — and your favorite stars.

What’s Kylie Jenner’s favorite color? Well, it ain’t blue! Our eyes are treated to a sea of pink as jump into the KUWTK star’s video featuring her everyday skincare routine.

Like most skincare routines, Kylie starts off with a foaming face wash. No real harm there, but as a dermatologist, I can tell you that washes just aren’t all that important in the grand scheme of things. See, washes are only in contact with your skin for a brief few seconds, so there just isn’t any tangible need to have this specific wash.

Kylie Jenner's Everyday Skincare RoutineDo you need a clean canvas to start? Absolutely. However, this is a category where you can save money, so be value conscience and instead, consider using a gentle wash like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser or even better, a gentle wipe like City Cloths.

Kylie then proceeds to pat her face with a washcloth, which I approve of, but she could improve her technique here. Avoid patting altogether! I recommend letting your face air-dry or using a hairdryer on the lowest cool setting to dry your face.

After that, she busts out the walnut scrub. I’m personally not a fan. I mean, look, I like nuts, just not on my face. Are we to understand that she ever so gently pats her face dry with a washcloth, but then immediately scrubs it with crushed walnuts? Where is the logic there? Skin chemists will tell you that abrasives in scrubs are simply too large on a microscopic level to function appropriately, and they often can, counterintuitively, cause damage.

Kylie Jenner's Everyday Skincare RoutineWhat happens when you damage your skin? It reacts by producing more oil. So, if you feel like you have sensitive skin or you feel like you have oily skin, it might be because you are using a scrub product that you don’t need! Forgo a scrub and instead, try a weekly or bi-weekly brightening pad like Rebrightalyze Pads from Modern Dermatology.

Next, Kylie utilizes a toner. Is a toner even necessary? This dermatologist doesn’t think so. When I ask a patient why they use a toner, they typically don’t know — and I don’t know either! Do you want to use a toner? Then go for it, but do you need to.

Kylie then implements a moisturizer. If you have dry skin or live in a dry environment, then a moisturizer is an imperative part of a skincare routine. I recommend really light moisturizers. You don’t want something thick, sticky, or tacky, especially under your makeup. So, try great lightweight moisturizers like Nourisse or Dermal Repair Cream.

Kylie Jenner's Everyday Skincare RoutineWhat is the thinnest, most delicate skin on the human body? It’s the skin around the eye — and here is the part of the video where she truly wins me over. Eye creams are great, and even though she incorporates it into her morning routine, you can use it at night before you go to bed. Want to wake up with soft, plump, well-hydrated skin around the eyes? Try Bye Bye Under Cream.

In closing, Kyle is an absolute star. I would never want to dull her sparkle, but I have to harsh her mellow just a tad and let you know that while her products are great, there are a ton of wonderful, reasonably priced options out there for you to explore. Sometimes in beauty, less is more! Avoid the products you don’t need.
