In a world of branding, sometimes it’s hard for independent hotels to stand out and get noticed. Certainly trendy bars, unique dining experiences, bath butlers and other amenities are often used to get attention.
In the case of The Whitehall Hotel in Chicago it was all about the bed.
A study conducted by TrustYou calculated guest reviews from TripAdvisor and a number of other consumer review outlets and was published by Travel + Leisure for a story “Most Comfortable Beds.” The Windy City hotel placed second in the rankings. The Distrikt Hotel in New York was first.
Margaret Ady of TrustYou stated in a press release, “Having a comfortable bed is key to a great hotel stay. Using TrustYou’s advanced semantic analysis and robust database, we analyzed hundreds of millions of verified reviews from travelers worldwide to uncover the most comfortable hotel beds in the US. With its lush linens, soft pillows and great mattresses, The Whitehall Hotel in Chicago clearly impressed travelers.”
What makes the Whitehall bed so good for a snooze? According to the hotel, the Hypnos mattresses “have three times more coils than any other luxury mattress and are hand stuffed with down and wrapped in cashmere.”
And while big companies may be ruled by committees and focus groups, Su Yen, proprietor of The Whitehall, selects every aspect of the design details.
“It is a rare opportunity to work so closely with an owner that is the force behind every decision,” says Sean Coghlan, Hotel Manager. “When [the decision] is made, Su Yen chooses the best whether it’s our residential-style furnishings or the most exclusive mattresses available.”
For elite travelers who aren’t familiar with the hotel, it was built in 1928 and has recently undergone a multimillion dollar renovation. The hotel is situated in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast, steps away from Michigan Avenue, The John Hancock Center, many attractions and designer shopping. The property has 222 guest rooms and suites, meeting and banquet facilities as well as two themed restaurants.
