Edward Muller is a businessman with his fingers in many pies but we know him best as the owner of Selvedge Grooming, the luxury men’s brand that’s sold at high-end boutiques around the city. American-born Muller grew up in Beijing and Hong Kong, and after studying in Sydney he settled back in our fair city. We asked him how he stays in shape while running between meetings.
Where do you work out?
I work out at Guardian Fitness, a boutique Personal Training Gym in Central. I have been with my trainer Zubaid for around seven years. He’s awesome.
What’s your workout routine for summer?
Consistency is key. My summer workout is the same as my workouts year-round; I do weight training twice a week – mixing up powerlifting movements, pull-ups and circuits. Quite simple and no thrills. I also teach at XYZ two or three times a week – that will be my cardio.
What are your diet secrets?
Low carbs on days I don’t workout. I stay away from refined sugars and carbohydrates. I am also lucky that I don’t have a sweet tooth, so that helps.
What have you found worked for you – and what didn’t?
I don’t deprive myself of what I want to eat – I find that I am more likely to overindulge if I do.
What are you craving on your cheat-days?
Wood-over pizza from Mercato, especially the spicy salami, broccoli & ricotta pizza.
What’s your top tip for getting the best summer body?
When I hear ‘summer body’ I think abs on a junk. At the end of the day it is all about how we think we are perceived by others; we don’t have to have a six- or eight-pack to feel good about ourselves, sure it helps but it’s just a tool to the ultimate goal: confidence. It’s cheesy (yes, I am still craving pizza and I might work-out today just to get a slice of it) but respect your body all year round. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. As long as we are healthy, eat right and make the time to sweat, that’s all that matters … and stay hydrated!
