SONGKRAN 2016

APRIL 2016

Songkran

Songkran is a national holiday marking the Thai New Year.

Traditionally Thais pay tribute to their elders and also visit Wats to pray and give alms to monks. Fragranced water is poured over Buddha images to bring good luck and prosperity before being collected and poured gently over the shoulders of elders as a mark of respect. This custom of pouring water has been reinterpreted by younger generations who drench one another in colossal water fights. April is the hottest month in Bangkok, with temperatures reaching 40°C, so a shower of cold water comes as a welcomed relief from the heat. Should you wish to participate, head to Kao San Road or the Silom district equipped with a good water pistol. For more traditional celebrations visit the Phra Pradaeng district where there are boat races, parades with floral floats and a flag ceremony.
