The 2019 Emmy Awards on September 22 was truly a star-studded event. From Sophie Turner to Ariel Winter and Zendaya, celebs flocked to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to honor all the talented actors and actresses who were nominated. Of course, the party doesn’t stop when the last award of the night goes out, there were tons of glittering afterparties for the stars to choose from. Many even traded in their dazzling red carpet looks for something much more party-friendly.
The list of winners from the evening was an interesting mix, with Fleabag — starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Andrew Scott — taking home the prize for Outstanding Comedy Series. However, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept the rest of the comedy categories with eight wins, including Alex Borstein being named as Best Supporting Actress and Tony Shalhoub for Best Supporting Actor.
As for drama, Game of Thrones took home the prize in a whopping 12 categories for its seventh (and final) season. Some of the standout wins were: Outstanding Drama Series and Peter Dinklage for Best Supporting Actor.
Another important win went to Billy Porter in the category of Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Pray Tell in Pose. He is the first openly gay African American man to not only be nominated but to win the coveted prize. “We as artists are the people that get to change the molecular structure of the hearts and minds of the people who live on this planet,” the 50-year-old explained to People about being awarded in the “category of love.” The actor added, “Please don’t ever stop doing that. Please don’t ever stop telling the truth.”
After the FX star won his award, he admitted that he was elated after decades of hustling hard. “It’s been [long]. It’s been a lot of work. It’s been a long time. And I am just so grateful that I live long enough to see the day where I could stand up in front of the world as my true authentic self. My true authentic self, I was told that who I am was never going to work,” he said in the press room. “I was told that who and what I am would never be successful. Period. That’s what I was told. I did not believe that. I did not believe that. This is proof positive that believe in yourself, invest in yourself, Love yourself, and then teach other people how to do it.”
