The Arctic, with its local herbs, berries and melting glacier water, offers the perfect conditions for brewing spirits. Off the Map Travel’s Arctic travel specialists are now offering guests the chance to experience a new immersive tour at the world’s northernmost distillery to sample their finest tipples.
Guests will be guided by an expert distiller and will see, feel and smell the Arctic ingredients as they are taken on a journey through the art of Arctic distillation. On this journey of the senses, guests learn about Viking drinking customs and Northern Norwegian drinking habits, as well as sampling the world’s most northerly brand of gin, vodka and aquavit; all in spectacular surroundings.
The Aurora Spirit Distillery is nestled deep in the Norwegian Arctic wilderness, at the foot of the majestic Lyngen Alps. Jonathan Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel and Arctic travel expert, said; “This new experience delivers a wonderful opportunity to combine local produce and culture, with the chance to see the making of, and sample, Norwegian spirits at their best.”
Aurora Spirit Distillery produces a range of products under its Bivrost brand, a name used in old Norse mythology for the Northern Lights. Legend has it that Bivrost was a bridge between heaven and earth, guarded by the fierce god Heimdall of Norse mythology.
The architecture and design of the distillery is as stunning as the landscape surrounding it, with floor to ceiling glass, it creates the perfect place to enjoy an exquisite lunch made up of local delicacies and maybe indulge further in a drink, whilst watching the local wildlife and enjoying the views of the fjord and snow-covered peaks of the encircling mountains.
“The distillery and products are the creation of locals Hans, Tor and Anne Lise, who shared a passion for food, drink and adventure,” adds Cooper. “You are welcomed in as part of the family, and leave more knowledgeable and with the taste of the distillery’s fine spirits still warming your soul.
“It’s a great story as Hans, was inspired by his frequent visits to Scotland and the similarity in environment, the difference being Scotland had whisky, so he asked why couldn’t Norway? and with this single thought and a lot of hard work, AuroraSpirit was born. It now celebrates the Nordic Arctic region, by producing some of the purest drinks in the world.”
Experiencing Aurora Spirit Distillery can form part of a tailor-made itinerary which can include other luxury experiences like private snowshoeing tours or photography in Lyngenfjord; you have the option to extend the stay for dinner and relax in a hot tub while Northern Lights hunting, all of this and more from the distillery’s Arctic setting. As with any itinerary from Off the Map Travel, every itinerary can be tailor-made to fit the wishes and travel aspirations of any guest.
