Strengthening Split Nails.

I feel like I've neglected my beauty readers a lot lately, I haven't done a beauty post in a while - I've just had too many events to blog about recently.

Anyway, I used to wear nail polish every day religiously, I felt naked without it. But then my nails started splitting so badly that I would put nail polish on and by the afternoon part of my nail had flaked off and the polish looked stupid. I spoke to some of the girls and they said it was because I was using nail polish and remover too much, and it was drying out my nails. I stopped using nail polish for a long time, about 6 months, and have only just started using it again now that they're back to being strong.

So, how did I do it? Well. I first tried the Sally Hansen Nail Thickener, which to put it bluntly, was shockingly shit. It was basically an over-priced clear nail polish and did nothing to strengthen them, and just flaked off after a few days like a normal nail polish would! 70% thicker in 4 days?! Pfffft, whatever! The biggest waste of money ever!

I eventually managed to strengthen them again by;
A) Not wearing polish or using remover for a loong time (around 6 months)
B) Moisturiser!

I'd read a while ago that moisturiser is your nails' best friend when they're dried out. Every time you use polish and remover it strips the nails of their moisture and dehydrates them, and every time you wash your hands the same happens...they're stripped of their moisture. So just think how dehydrated your hands and nails must be after a day of washing your hands every time you go to the bathroom!?
I've been moisturising as much as possible (ie; when I remember), and now they're back to being strong...and I'm back to layering the nail polish on :/ woops!

My favourite hand moisturiser is the Jergens Ultra Healing Extra Dry Skin Hand Cream (what a mouthful!), it soaks in really quickly, and leaves them feeling lovely and soft, and doesn't feel oily or greasy at all! Apologies that this photo is a stock photo, I usually leave my moisturiser at work so always forget to bring it home to photograph!

What's your favourite hand cream? Do you know of any other great ways to strengthen nails?
