Surprise! Nicki Minaj married Kenneth Petty after one year of dating on October 21. The artist announced the big news via Instagram with a video that showed some of their newlywed swag — including hats that read “Bride” and “Groom.” Clearly excited about this new chapter, Nicki simply captioned the announcement with her new legal name: Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty.
A slew of the “Swalla” artist’s celebrity friends rallied to congratulate the new Mr. and Mrs. “Congrats queen!” Christina Aguilera gushed and Don’t Be Tardy star Brielle Biermann echoed, “Congratulations!” Rapper Banks added, “Congrats babyyy, put a ring pon [sic] it yes!” Former Bad Girls Club star Tanisha Thomas wrote, “Omg Sis you were serious congratulations.”
The couple already stirred up marriage rumors earlier this fall when the 36-year-old changed her name on Twitter to Mrs. Petty. Fans knew that a walk down the aisle was coming because of the short window of time they had after picking up their marriage license at a Beverly Hills courthouse. “We still had to pick it up and I was traveling, by the time I came back, we had to renew it again,” the Grammy nominee explained about picking up the documents during the August 12 episode of her Queen Radio show. “From that time, you have 90 days to get married. That was about a week ago, so now I have about 80 days.”
Nicki also confirmed that their first ceremony would be small and intimate, but the duo is hoping to do a larger gathering after things settle down a bit. “I have to work on my album and I have a lot to focus on that I don’t want to do the big wedding now. We’ll do the big wedding later,” she divulged about her wedding plans. “I’ll be married before my album comes out, but will have my wedding after the album comes out. Before the 90 days is over, yes, I will be married.”
Despite saying she had new music in the works, the “Megatron” rapper took to Twitter a few weeks later and claimed that she was thinking of leaving the industry to focus on something new. “I’ve decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, in the box — cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE,” she wrote on September 5. She hasn’t elaborated more on this claim, but her fans are keeping their fingers crossed that her “retirement” is still a ways off.
Although the couple has received backlash from fans because of Kenneth’s criminal history, it looks like they don’t care what anyone thinks about their love. Congrats, you two!
