How Face Masks and Boiler Suits Dominated Fashion Headlines This Year

face masks fashion

Protective face masks have become the must-have fashion accessory of 2020 — something no one could have imagined this time last year.

Indeed, the pandemic has shaken up our daily lives, from ways of consuming to ways of working and even fashion inspirations. Bandanas, XXL jewelry, belt bags and platform thigh boots were initially primed to be fashion's stars of 2020. But the novel coronavirus pandemic soon put paid to that, changing the plan for designers, brands and major ready-to-wear chains.

While certain pieces, fabrics and colours managed to defy the various waves of the pandemic, most faltered in the face of lockdown measures and even more so with the rise of the face mask. In fact, masks became one of the year's hottest accessories, way ahead of the stilettos, jewelry, it-bags and other items proffered by big-hitters in the world of style. After all, if you're going to have to wear face masks, you might as well invest in trendy models or designs to match your outfits.

Comfort is king

The quest for comfort inherent to the pandemic gave rise to new trends that may never have flourished without the public health crisis. As people bunkered down and worked from home, activewear proved a major hit alongside loungewear such as pyjamas.

Similarly, the cottagecore trend — which sees the return of clothing in romantic styles and/or inspired by nature — has boomed this year, putting a spotlight on floral dresses, Peter Pan collar blouses and cable-knit cardigans.

Comfort and relaxed styles, plus the need for functional pieces, also largely drove a utility wear trend and sparked interest in boiler suits, combat boots, cargo pants and even bucket hats — despite these being banished from womenswear wardrobes for more than a decade.

[caption id="attachment_212545" align="aligncenter" width="819"]face masks fashion The sartorial trends for 2020 also include boiler suits and utility wear. (Image: Praneeth Koduru/ Pexels)[/caption]

Making fashion more sustainable

Sartorial trends this year have also taken a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly direction. Vegan leather and eco-friendly fabrics in general — whether sustainable or recycled — have found favour along with upcycled collections

When it comes to colours, this year's top trends are focused on soft shades and retro hues, with brown, lavender, and coral — shades that once again evoke nature — being particularly popular.

Face Masks Go High-Tech With Speech Translation and Air Purifiers

From monitoring vital signs to filtering filthy air and even translating speech into other languages, the coronavirus-fuelled boom in face masks has spawned an unusual range of high-tech options.

As masks become the norm worldwide, tech companies and researchers are rolling out weird and wonderful models to both guard against infection and cash in on a growing trend.

One of the wackiest comes from Japan, where start-up Donut Robotics has created a face covering that helps users adhere to social distancing and also acts as a translator.

The "C-Face" mask works by transmitting a wearer's speech to a smartphone via an app, and allows people to have a conversation while keeping up to 10 metres apart. "Despite the coronavirus, we sometimes need to meet directly with each other," Donut Robotics chief executive Taisuke Ono told AFP.

The lightweight silicone device could have immediate benefits for people such as doctors who want to communicate with patients from a distance, the company says.

It can translate speech from Japanese into English, Korean and other languages — a function that will become more useful once travel restrictions are eventually eased. But it does not offer protection from Covid-19 on its own, and is designed to be worn over a regular face covering when it goes on sale in February for about 4,000 yen (HK$297).

Donut Robotics raised nearly 100 million yen (HK$7.4 million) via crowdfunding to develop it, a success Ono believes was driven by a desire for innovations to make life easier during the pandemic. "We may be able to fight the virus with technology, with human wisdom," Ono said.

Another face mask developed in Singapore is aimed at protecting medics treating Covid-19 patients. It has sensors that monitor body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels, and relay data to a smartphone via a Bluetooth transmitter.

"Many of these frontline workers will be exposed to patients when they are taking their vital signs," Loh Xian Jun, one of the scientists behind the invention, told AFP. "This poses a health risk to the nurses, and we wanted to think about a way to reduce such risk."

Its inventors say the device could also monitor vital signs of migrant workers in crowded dormitories, which incubated massive virus outbreaks in the city-state this year. They hope to trial it in the near future and market it commercially.

[caption id="attachment_211646" align="alignnone" width="1024"]face masks high-tech More face masks such as LG's PuriCare mask are going high-tech with built-in air purifiers. (Image: LG)[/caption]

For those seeking to combat the effects of pollution in smog-choked cities, South Korea's LG Electronics has developed PuriCare, an air purifier mask. The futuristic white device, which fits snugly around the wearer's mouth, nose and chin, is equipped with two filters on either side and fans to aid airflow.

The filters are similar to those in the company's home air purifiers, and can block 99.95 percent of harmful particles.

Thousands have already been made available to medical staff and it will also be rolled out in shops in the future, the company says.

How Mask-Wearing has Transformed Our Beauty Habits

Face masks have now been made mandatory in enclosed spaces in many countries worldwide, and must even be worn outdoors in cities particularly affected by coronavirus infections.

Evidently, mask-wearing has shaken up many aspects of our daily lives, right down to our beauty regimes. From makeup to facial care and product textures, not to mention acne-zapping products, here's a look at some of the changes face masks are bringing to your bathroom and your makeup bag, all in spite of the latest trends.

No makeup: From dream to reality

While plenty of celebrities, such as Alicia Keys, embraced the "no makeup" face well before the global pandemic, lockdown has changed the game profoundly, offering people a real opportunity to accept themselves without makeup.

[caption id="attachment_211494" align="aligncenter" width="640"]mask-wearing beauty Alicia Keys has been an advocate of #nomakeup even before Covid-19 happened. (Image: Alicia Keys/ Facebook)[/caption]

A global trend that has visibly transcended borders given the proliferation of hashtags like "#nomakeup," "#nomakeupday," "#nomakeupchallenge" or "#nomakeupselfie" that have swamped social media this year, all accompanied by pictures showing the world that self-acceptance is today more than just a theory.

This analysis is reinforced by mask-wearing, which isn't particularly compatible with wearing makeup. As well as hiding carefully made-up faces, masks cause foundation and lipstick to rub off in a few minutes, and can increase the risk of blemishes. Those are three good reasons that have led many women to banish makeup from their beauty routines.

[caption id="attachment_211493" align="alignnone" width="1024"]mask-wearing beauty If you're wearing a face mask and shades, you can probably skip makeup altogether. (Image: Bara Buri/ Unsplash)[/caption]

In fact, a poll of 3,018 people carried out by Ifop for the Slow Cosmétique label back in June revealed that 21% of French women surveyed reported wearing makeup every day at the end of lockdown, compared to 42% in 2017. This drop suggests that major changes are afoot in women's beauty habits.

New boom: Mascaras and transfer-resistant products

And even those who aren't (yet) fully onboard the "no makeup" movement have seen their habits change. This is again reflected in the Ifop survey for Slow Cosmétique, which shows that women who regularly wear makeup are now paying more attention to their eyes, rather than skin and, in particular, lips.

And the reason, as mentioned above, is not only that it isn't seen, but also that it simply doesn't stay on due to the rubbing of the mask causing transfer. This observation is supported by sales and searches for these products online, which confirm the current appetite for mascaras, eyeliners and eyebrow products to the detriment of lipsticks and facial products. Interestingly, these products were all the rage before the public health crisis hit, notably driven by trends for contouring, highlighting and baking, and the generally sculpted look.

[caption id="attachment_211499" align="alignnone" width="1024"]mask-wearing beauty Eye makeup is now more important than ever. (Image: Kelly Sikkema/ Unsplash)[/caption]

While many women have given up on lipstick and facial products, others are favouring more specific products, making way for a new trend — the boom in transfer-proof formulations. Brands have been offering such products for several weeks, responding to growing demand from makeup fans who don't want to give in to the mask.

Originally developed to stop lipstick transferring during a meal, when sipping a drink or giving a kiss, these products now seem like the ideal solution for mask-wearing times. Note that lightweight formulations and setting products like powders are also prime choices to overcome the inconvenience of mask-wearing.

Maskne and other skin blemishes

You've no doubt already have heard of "mascne" or "maskne" — acne from wearing face masks — which has become a problem since mask-wearing was made mandatory. These blemishes, or even acne, are caused by the rubbing of the mask and the elastic straps, as well as by the fact that facial coverings stop the skin from breathing.

It's a problem that can affect anyone, at any age — even if people with blemish-prone skin are more susceptible to the problem — and can require a few tweaks to beauty regimes. Before reaching for any kind of product to treat maskne, start by setting — and sticking to — a few day-to-day ground rules. For example, favour fabric masks, which are more breathable than surgical varieties, and change your mask several times a day.

[caption id="attachment_211500" align="aligncenter" width="769"]mask-wearing beauty Spend more time on skincare, as mask-wearing may aggravate existing conditions and cause blemishes. (Image: Coline Hasle/ Unsplash)[/caption]

When it comes to beauty routines, the usual techniques should be reinforced: Removing makeup and cleansing skin are now non-negotiable at the end of a day in a mask. Next, treat skin with a suitable skincare product, and hydrate skin every morning before putting your mask back on.

It's a good idea to use more lightweight textures than usual and to look for non-comedogenic products to reduce the risk of spots, redness and other blemishes. Note that foundation can contribute to preventing skin breathing too. It's therefore better to reduce the use of this product if you don't want to end up dealing with acne.
