Al Capone’s Armoured Bulletproof Cadillac Can Be Yours for HK$7.8 Million
Al Capone or “Scarface” is probably the most notorious gangster in American history, known for dominating organised crime in the mean streets of Chicago in the late 1920s. While it may be 100 years since the height of his criminal career, he’s still relevant today – or at least his car is.
Celebrity Cars, the dealership connecting auto buyers to some of the most rare and exotic vehicles, is listing Al Capone’s former 1928 Cadillac Series 342-A Town Sedan for US$1 million (approximately HK$7.8 million). The mob leader earned a high profile reputation, likely leading him to outfit his car with bulletproof glass windows and over 1,360kg of armoured plating. It was one of the earliest bulletproof cars made. The Cadillac is also fitted with a modified window featuring a cutout for machine gun firing, while the back windows are adjustable so that back seat passengers could fire out the back as well.
The ownership history of the car has been tracked from 1933 through records from newspapers, FBI and the IRS. The information suggests that the car was purchased while Capone was imprisoned following his conviction in 1931. The license plate was traced back to Capone’s wife, Mae Capone in 1931. Documentation indicates that it was later relocated to New York and then England. It was restored in the 1950s, with much of the original armour removed. The car was later exhibited at the Cars of Greats museum in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1971, then again at Smoky Mountain Car Museum in Tennessee before being acquired by car collector John O’Quinn.
