Jaeger-LeCoultre and Mr Porter Unveil the Ultimate Spy Watch

“Manners maketh man”. And so does his timepiece.

Leading up to the release of The King’s Man, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Mr Porter have teamed up on the release of the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife watch, a piece that brings gentlemanly sophistication to the rough and tumble world of the spy game.

Limited to just 100 pieces, the watch is inspired by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s celebrated 1907 Couteu pocket watches, featuring a winding crown located at 12 o’clock, with a discreet cutout in the alligator strap to accommodate it. It also has a broad bezel that slopes gently from the sapphire crystal all the way to the edge of the case, creating a knife blade-like effect. Inside, it is powered by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 849 movement – at just 1.85mm thick – and housed in an 18-karat rose gold case.

While it pays homage to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s traditional pocket watches, the timepiece has been modernised and its aesthetic toned down with simple index hour markers to keep the dial refined and clean, while a finely drawn ring is repeated as a circular highlight on the bezel. Presented in an elegant 40mm size, the pink gold case is a mere 4.25mm thick.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, The King’s Man is the latest entry in The Kingsman spy-comedy franchise, and is slated for a September 2020 release. It serves as a prequel to the films, tracing the origin of the Kingsman secret intelligence organisation and stars an ensemble cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Daniel Brühl and Aaron Taylor Johnson.

"Our manufacture is proud of its heritage which drives the creativity of our master watchmaking since 1833. We are delighted to partner with Matthew Vaughn and Mr Porter to unveil a unique timepiece celebrating the elegance pioneering spirit. The thinness of this watch, inspired from a pocket-watch with a knife shape from 1907 is illustrating the skills and creativity of our fully integrated manufacture. It represents the spirit of times with timepieces passed from generation to generation," Catherine Renier, CEO, Jaeger-LeCoultre, says.

Seven of the Best Auto-Inspired Watches for Men

Cars and wristwatches practically grew up together. Both were born at the turn of the 20th century and, during the mid-20th century, many watch brands were inspired by the aerodynamics of automobile racing and world racing records that were being set on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats. Watchmakers sponsored racecar drivers and races around the... View Article

Hublot Claims Pink for the Boys

Fiat heir Lapo Elkann is a man of many reputations, some good and others, not so much.

Although he has been notorious for a couple of wildly bizarre (one near-fatal) episodes involving drugs, he’s also equally treasured – and especially so in his native Italy, where he’s regarded as uncrowned royalty – for an impeccable style that he has clearly inherited from his late grandfather, Gianni Agnelli, and an equally astute sense of design, which he’s incorporated into various successful business ventures.

[caption id="attachment_208876" align="aligncenter" width="1292"] Lapo Elkann, Founder and Creative Chairman of Garage Italia Customs[/caption]

When working at Fiat in his twenties, he championed the successful re-birth of the Italian car-maker’s tiny Cinquecento runabout. And when he left the company shortly afterwards he founded his own business, Italia Independent, which started out designing and making eyewear and has since tied up with other brands over a variety of products. More recently, his Milan-based Garage Italia Customs personalises almost any form of transport you than think of, from scooters to supercars and yachts to private jets.

A longstanding tie-up of with Hublot has spawned a number of special-edition watches, too, perhaps most notably a series of timepieces that Elkann re-imagined in cooperation with the famed Neapolitan menswear house of Rubinacci, which utilised tweed for the dial and straps. And in a new collaboration with the Swiss manufacture, he’s claimed Millennial Pink as a colour that can be flaunted by men as easily as it can by women.

[caption id="attachment_208877" align="aligncenter" width="2049"] A closer look at the watch[/caption]

In fact, the Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink, which has just been released in a limited edition of 200 pieces, is in a shade of the colour that’s less girly than the elegant tint of a bone-dry Provençal rosé. And that, in combination with the watch’s relatively hefty dimensions – 42mm in diameter and 14.5mm thickness – and a skeleton construction that’s self-evidently technical, makes it far more gender-neutral that might be imagined (though having said that, it can be worn on the most slender of wrists). In fact, we’re going to stick out our necks by suggesting that the Millennial Pink is more likely to be appreciated by men than women.

[caption id="attachment_208878" align="aligncenter" width="1810"] Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink[/caption]

Constructed largely from lightweight aluminium – a material unusual in watchmaking though not new to Hublot – it wears light on the wrist in spite of its size, and the anodising process used to apply the colour is also said to protect it from scratches. It’s powered by the proprietary HUB 1250 Unico automatic chronograph movement with column wheel, whose mechanism is visible on both sides of the case and which offers 72 hours of power. The watch is provided with two straps that are easily interchangeable using Hublot’s One Click system: one, in fabric, is attached using a Velcro fastener and the other, in rubber, features a matching pink aluminium buckle.

[caption id="attachment_208879" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] French footballer Kylian Mbappé[/caption]

Whether it’s down to its daring and humour, the ease with which it can be worn and also its technical prowess, the Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink is a watch that impresses us enormously. Strap one on to your own wrist – if, that is, you’re lucky enough to find one – you’ll almost certainly be blown away too.

LAB 02: A Breakthrough for Corum

Corum has been one of those brands that's managed not to be pigeonholed into a specific category of watches. With its wide spectrum of collections -- from the very classic and boardroom-worthy designs of the Golden Bridge collection, to the sporty, bolder stylings of the Admiral, and the quirky charms of the Bubble -- Corum has been able to cater to nearly every predilection.

Enter the LAB collection, with its unapologetically audacious aesthetic and high complications, Corum brings to the fore its technological capabilities and willingness to push the bounds of design. The latest addition to this family, the LAB 02, comes right on the heels of its “Risk is the Reward” campaign, which was launched to celebrate the innovations over its 65-year history, while setting the tone for the brand's direction going forward.

And certainly, the LAB 02 sets the bar quite high. For this watch, Corum was not content with just a flying tourbillon—it needed a flying gear train as well. This took the team on a two-year quest, and finally came up with the Caliber CO 300, which consists of over 400 components, each meticulously skeletonised and finely finished. Each piece has been assembled by hand, seeing the flying tourbillon at 06:00, with flying wheels that track the hours, minutes and seconds, and the bridge set directly onto the mainplate.

Additionally, the team managed to build a movement that is not sandwiched between the mainplate and bridge, made possible with a longer than usual axis for the gear train, and, without having a top bridge, required ball bearings instead of rubies on the mainplate to add strength and stability. The entire movement was then placed on a fully transparent sapphire plate through which the owner, and bystanders for that matter, can enjoy a movement that appears as though it's suspended.

Only 10 pieces of the LAB 02 will be made, each identified by a specific number on the barrel. Each watch can be customised so that the colour of gold, diamond cuts and settings, or if it should take your fancy, coloured gemstones, can be selected.
