The A List: Our Favourite Restaurants

Happy Paradise, Hong Kong

Consider yourself warned: Chef May Chow’s Happy Paradise restaurant is a full-throttle experience of traditional Chinese cuisine. Neon lights beam down as you tuck into a menu filled with brilliantly creative upgrades on classic dishes. The innovative cocktail list does much the same, taking serious ingredients and giving them an adventurous rework. This is a great spot for a high-energy dinner with friends, with the food and drink working exceptionally hard to make it a dinner you won’t quickly forget.

LIFESTYLE TIP: They’re open into the wee hours, also making it a perfect late-night pick come the weekend.

Out, Tokyo

If decision-making isn’t your strongpoint, then Out is where you need to go. One dish, one wine, one record playing. And there you have it. But what we really, really love about this minimalist joint is that the wine is great red, the dish is luscious pasta with shaved black truffle, and the music is Led Zeppelin. Trust us, you’ll feel awesome just stepping over the threshold. As tends to be the case in Tokyo, there are only 10 seats around the curved counter, and another three stools at a separate table.

LIFESTYLE TIP: Ask nicely and you can get Pol Roger champagne served by the glass or bottle.

Canvas, Bangkok

Canvas opened back in April and has been feeding hungry diners the best contemporary flavours of Bangkok ever since. An open kitchen – led by Chef Riley Sanders – aims to offset the sometimes-stuffy vibe of fine-dining establishments; welcoming, yet sophisticated, it does just that. The à la carte menu might be small, but rest assured this only means that each dish you try will be packed full of incredible flavour.

LIFESTYLE TIP: The servers here are totally clued up – don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations.

Blackwattle, Singapore

Make Blackwattle your first stop in Singapore for fine-dining cuisine without the haughty attitude and white linen table cloths. This Australian restaurant in Singapore is on a mission to make fabulous food more accessible, so while the plating might look first class (and it really does), the service and space are purposefully more relaxed. Choose from à la carte, set menus or a stellar list of bar snacks and get set for a superb foodie experience.

LIFESTYLE TIP: Ditch the dinner rush and book a table for the incredibly well-priced set lunch.
