Fearless in her way, she hypnotized the world with her charisma. From schooling the B-town biggies to being a leading lady she did it all fearlessly. Quirky, spunky and valiant is how Aditi from Team TMM gets to know convivial Daisy Shah in this conversation.
1.) You began as a dancer and assistant to choreographer Ganesh Acharya. Was getting into films a conscious decision or all destiny?
It was a destiny’s game only when I consciously took a decision. Dance is a stress-buster for me. I never took it up to be the creator of the set where anyone or everyone could shake a leg. For being a choreographer, one has to be overly creative. By the time I realized my growth in the industry, I had already completed 10years and was preparing for the next one. Shifting my gear to another industry would have been Not a smart move. Instead, I decided to stay on. Within the same phase, a Gentleman who was directing a Kannada film approached me to play the female lead in his production. Apprehensive, but excitedly I went for the auditions. To my surprise, I bagged the role in a third language. Ironically, the film never got released but a project that followed my first become a big hit. That is how the world takes it.
2) Are you formally trained in a specific dance format?
Bollywood. I am formally trained in a form which runs in our blood. Nothing, in particular, I am surely mastering Bollywood.
3) Coming from a Gujarati family, you have done Bollywood, Kannada films. How do you manage to learn so many languages?
Born to a Gujarati family, learning Gujarati as a language was more like walking on a bed of roses. The city I grew up in is Mumbai, Marathi had to be on the books along with Hindi and English ever since the first day of school. Finally, when films happened I matured in the basics of Kannada. I would love to learn another language which comes as perks of doing a good project.
4) How does the business of ‘dance forms’ work wonders for a project at the box office? Do you think the Indian dance forms are somewhere losing its sheen to international dance formats?
Everything that you see on-screen is a simple response to ‘what the audience seeks to watch’. The fast forward to the twentieth century has done a facelift to both the songs and the dance. It completely is based on the genre of the motion picture, a and requirement that decides the ‘moves’. However, for a period film, the requirements may differ. They may either choose a classical or folk format for the projects which are a perfect fit for the ‘vibe’ of the project.
5) Does being professionally qualified in a skill like dance help one perform better on screen?
The only edge you have on being a dancer is the lack of stage-fear. This aids to push you in a no-threat-from-camera zone too. Unfortunately, emoting actions is not something that comes naturally. All of which asks for additional effort to be done.
6) In a world when as a celebrated face you are in front of the camera, how do you keep your life to yourself?
It may sound uncommon but I avoid putting my personal life on the social media. It dries up ‘everything personal’ from my life. Thus, what is mine, stays with me.
7) Bollywood is slowly moving towards films which are more artistic than commercial. Are we going in the right direction?
Honestly speaking, I am glad we are. Nothing that we see on screen today seems like something that is cooked up. The new age audience chooses ‘real’ cinematic experience. We have finally realized that over-dramatization only steals away the limelight from the cinema. All of this together builds a conducive environment for the audience to relate to the story, characters, and picturization.
8) Your next project being RACE 3; how different is it from your previous projects?
Every scene unfolds a different chapter in the series. This is for the first time that I have signed an action-thriller which makes it more special for me.
