The ‘BIG’ shift: Priya Banerjee
From being a marketing student to a Bollywood actor; she aced it all on a holiday. Meet Priya Banerjee, as she spills the beans of her transition in the industry in a tête-à-tête with TMM.
From expertise in International Marketing and Computer Science to Bollywood, how did this transformation happen?
Post my graduation, I had come down to India for a holiday, when I enrolled myself in an acting course at ‘Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares’ to learn the nitty-gritty of art. It was all going great and then I ended up auditioning for my first Telugu movie which I was pretty sure I wouldn’t get through. When I reached Canada post my acting course; I got a call that I have been short-listed for the film and I shall be shooting in San Francisco. I was pretty excited about the entire idea and decided to come back. Thereafter, I got an offer for another film in Telugu. This led to me working here in India and my plan of going back home never worked out.
Telugu, Tamil and a Bollywood movie, how has been the experience?
My experience of working in the industry has been amazing. I got the opportunity to work with some great actors who have been in the industry for a very long time. Thus, I got to learn so much from everyone around. I’m enjoying every bit of it.
What are the other projects you are working on?
3 Dev is my next release with Karan Singh Grover, Ravi Dubey, Kunaal Kapoor and Kay Kay Menon. It’s a comedy film. I have two other releases this year from different genres.
What is your take on the web series?
Web shows are doing very well in India. It is great to envision it as a wonderful medium which makes it possible for us to watch it on our phones and watch shows at own discretion. Also, I believe it has opened more opportunities for actors, directors and writers who want to work beyond television. In the next few years I see web getting really big.
Is there a dream role you would like to do and why?
My dream role would honestly be something that Priyanka Chopra played in ‘Aitraaz’. I believe, doing a strong female role would be challenging and fun to play.
