Meet Dr. Farhan Khan, a homeopath physician, who has been practicing since 2012 in the city of Belgaum, Karnataka, and apart from his full-time profession as a doctor, he is also a creative soul who creates varied digital content on social media platforms by the name ‘Fizuliyat’. For Farhan, it’s been all about serving mankind with his degree and creating entertaining and enlightening content via his social media channels. In a conversation with TMM, he talks about his journey and what keeps him content and happy in life.
You studied homeopathy to live your parents’ dream. How has been the journey so far?
It was my dad who wished that I become a doctor. He had two reasons for it, one that I serve the poor and the second was for me to become independent and be my own boss. So, following his words, I completed my bachelors from Bharatesh Homoeopathic Medical College, Belgaum in 2012. I started practicing in the same year at my first clinic ‘A Syeda Khuteja Memorial Clinic – Al Ameena’. Later in 2015, I started practicing at my second clinic ‘Cure & Care’. I did my post-graduation from the National Academy of Homoeopathy India, Nagpur under the stalwarts of Indian Homoeopathy, Dr. Kasim Chimathanawala (sir) & Dr. Aadil Chimathanawala. It’s been 9 years and it’s fulfilling that I serve people and help them get rid of their sufferings. Nothing else gives more peace & pleasure. For me, it’s more of a social service than a source of income. Although initially I had no plans of practicing, once I got addicted to the smiles that I receive from my patients, I started loving my job.
With your clinic, you have become a source of livelihood for many. Any comments.
I won’t call it a source of livelihood but it supports the cause of my patients. Most of my patients are daily wagers, laborers who don’t have a sound financial status. I have understood their need, they can’t miss a day, for them to be sick & rest would be a big blow. I just try & help them recover swiftly, keep educating them as most of them haven’t completed their studies and live below the poverty line. I charge a nominal fee which allows them to maintain their livelihoods.
What was the idea behind starting your Instagram page and why you chose the name Fizu?
Everybody back then used Facebook which never asked any username until Instagram did. I used to spend quite some time on Facebook during my college days and used to hear taunts from my parents, “Kya fizul kaam karte rehta hai, ja padhai kar”, which later inspired me to go with the username ‘Fizuliyat’ which eventually gave me a new name ‘Fizu’. And my idea was just to explore & share a few moments, I never thought I would someday become a creator and people would like what I do.
Your YouTube videos have poetic narrations and couplets too. Do you love writing?
Not just YouTube, I use Instagram & Twitter too, for sharing my experiences, fantasies & opinions about various subjects. I believe that it’s God’s gift that I can play with words. I write poems, stories, one-liners. My #FizuGkBol has hundreds of my writings mostly in Rekhta. I love writing and it surprises me sometimes.
In ankhon ka sach
Sath deti zban
Meri soch, meri samajh
Mere kalam se bayan.
Your YouTube videos address a lot of social interest and current affair issues in a comic way. How do you choose subjects?
It’s very instantaneous, rarely planned. I have a keen interest in politics & current affairs. I try and present my opinion in a poetic way and try to create content out of it. It’s very tricky, to be honest, and satire and sarcasm helps. (smiles)
You have travelled a lot. Your favourite destination till date and why?
More than the destination, I believe in the journey & the company is very important. You can travel to any place and still enjoy it if you have the right people along. My trips to Kashmir, Oman, Kutch, and Sri Lanka have been overwhelming. The people I met & the experiences I had in these places are memorable. I travel with my travel partner Vitasta Bhat (fellow influencer & creator) and we both think the best one is still awaiting us, hopefully, once we get rid of Covid-19.
During the pandemic, doctors have suffered a lot because of peoples’ anger. What do you think needs to be done to safeguard the doctors?
It’s very complex. The limitation of doctors and the facilities they have. The emotional state and hope the people have. The management, the government, the doctors, the people, the whole system should be re-planned and corrected. People should be educated and more spacious hospitals should be built. The management should be gentle and provided with the right aids from the government. Every such story is different and all that I can blame is the system. The system creates such problems, you can point fingers at anybody you like until the system is corrected, as I said each story is different, sometimes it’s rude hospital management or negligence or it’s public anguish.
How often you create content and how much time goes into it. And how do you create a balance between your profession and passion?
I practice 6 hours a day. My afternoon visit to my clinic is between 12:00-2:00 pm & evening between 6:30 – 10:30 pm. Evenings are super busy, as people return to their homes after their work & usually consult post-sunset. As far as creating content on my pages is concerned, it comes naturally to me, 3:00 – 6:00 pm & post-dinner are when I shift to Fizuliyat from Dr. Farhan. Self-portraits, Snapchat/Instagram stories, reels hardly consume my time. I try to be unique and my observational skills help. The longer videos do make my day hectic, IGTV & YouTube videos take lots of effort and time. But when you’ve been doing this for 5 years, it becomes a daily routine.
One dream that you feel is yet to be fulfilled and why?
I am not a guy with big dreams. I am a realistic person, and I am content with the happiness around me. But I would love to cultivate my land and build my fields and keep contributing and not just continuing with my practice and content creations. I would like to be remembered for my ethical practice and my words because the rest of all is FIZUL!
