When the Lange 1 was first released in 1994 alongside the Cabaret, the Saxonia, and the Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite,” A. Lange & Söhne wasn’t so much the new kid on the block as opposed to the new kid on the newly rebuilt block. Twenty-five years on, the Glashüttian brand has climbed the ranks of the watch world and cemented its place in the upper echelons of watchmaking.
In celebrating the iconic Lange 1 and its success, A. Lange & Söhne has committed itself to releasing 10 commemorative editions throughout 2019, one a month till October. Last month, we showcased the Lange 1 “25th Anniversary” that showed at SIHH. This month, Lange has graced us with the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “25th Anniversary”, limited to 25 pieces and featuring the same argenté-coloured dial in solid silver contrasted with deep blue numerals.
The focal point on the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “25th Anniversary”, however, is the white-gold lunar disc that can be read at nine o’clock that boasts painstakingly hand-engraved stars, a first for the brand. The traditional Lange process is for the stars to be laser cut after the blue coating has been applied to the disc. In total, six stars can be seen on the indicator, and because the usual coating has not been applied, the display remains monochromatic, matching the rest of the staid dial.
From the back, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “25th Anniverary” showcases the same calibre L095.3 with the three-quarter plate that Saxonian watchmaking has made largely popular. As with other Lange timepieces, the calibre has been twice assembled by hand and finished meticulously. In this commemorative edition, however, the hand-engraved balance cock boasts a special message with the number “25” in the Lange-typical outsize date window, surrounded by a floral pattern. A blue coating has been applied to all the engraved recesses.
