The Happier Notes of Jubin Nautiyal

“Dreams do come true, all you need to do is, be consistent and committed,” says Jubin Nautiyal, the leading Indian playback singer and performer while getting his hair and makeup done at the Aloft New Delhi Aerocity for the December cover shoot of TMM. For Jubin, his source of energy and motivation lies in mountains and even after spending a decade in the City of Dreams, his heart belongs to his hometown Dehradun. Over the years, Jubin has realized that the only way to live your dreams is to walk out of your comfort zone and here he is, taking one step at a time to make it bigger in the years to come. Excerpts from the interview:

We have never seen Jubin in a gothic avatar before? So, how do you relate with this look you are shooting for TMM?
Well, I have never imagined myself in a gothic look as my personal style is different from the look I got for this cover shoot. It’s refreshing to see myself like this as this is for the first time I have donned the look. I am excited to see it on the cover for sure. Also, stepping out of the comfort zone is always exciting, so when I was briefed about the look, I was really excited and I love this process of transformation.

From Dehradun to Mumbai, how has been the journey till date?
Well,  I hail from small-town Dehradun, my family lives there so it wasn’t a cakewalk for me to reach where I am today, but I didn’t much care about difficulties as I had my goals very clear and what I wanted to do. Of course, I faced rejections and even asked if my line of work is right but when you surpass that stage and don’t let it get to you that is when an artist is built. My love for music keeps me going and makes me want to do it every day. It’s formally been 10 years since I entered the music industry, but it is about the effort gone 20 years before that. I think music was not something that I found in between my journey, but it has always been there with me and part of my journey.

Take us back to your childhood, how were you as a kid?
(Laughs) I was a naughty kid and I would say that amongst all the other things I did, music was and has always been that one thing that has saved me till date. It keeps me sane, patient and stable. That one hour in a day that I spend with myself and my guitar in a room jamming is all it takes to keep me doing music forever. I think it’s the most beautiful hour of my day and I still live by the quote, ‘Attached To My Roots’.

Singers are often romantic at heart. What is your idea of romance and love?
I sing romantic songs, so of course, I am a romantic person. There are many kinds of love and emotions around us and for me; love is being with my family, in my hometown in mountains, with my guitar in a room creating music. I hail from a small town Dehradun and my love for mountains is not hidden. They inspire me in life to go ahead, be strong, to create beautiful and soothing music which touches the soul. I love to be out in Mother Nature, because the love which I receive is so pure and innocent and that it helps me in my music as well. Whenever I feel off, I think of mountains, being there and it helps me rejuvenate. So yes, I am a romantic soul and in love with nature.

Singers often avoid certain types of food, keeping their voice quality in mind. Are you a foodie or do you also play safe in terms of food?
I am definitely a foodie, but I also keep my diet in check to be healthy. I love and enjoy home-cooked food the most. But as you know, being an artist, I am constantly working and travelling for shoots and concerts in different parts of the country. So, I keep trying different delicacies from different regions. We Indians are so rich in culture, art, food, clothing and many other things. Our roots are so strong; our history is like one of its kind and so is our food. So, when it comes to food, I love to try it all but also keep my health quotient in check too.

How and when did love for singing happen?
It started at a very young age and I started learning music as a subject in class 10th and 12th. Music has always been a part of my life. I am still learning and look at music like a curious student who wants to learn more, know more, evolve more and that helps me understand music over time. I still work as a child on my new songs, it keeps me and my music young at heart, and that is the most important part of my music.

If you could go back in time and tell one thing to 16-year-old Jubin, what would you say?
I wouldn’t change anything because wherever I have reached in my life it’s all because of the learning and upbringing I got back in those days. I was very raw and innocent to the world of music. For me, music was my first and last priority and even I have maintained that today after so many years. It helped me learn new skills, mould me to fit the workforce and I am happy that I have been able to push myself to the limits and out of my comfort zone, else couldn’t have made it here. Life teaches you many things and you have to be patient with the time because I believe if you keep your honesty and innocence in your work you’ll get to achieve your goal in life no matter what. Keep learning, evolving, moulding yourself with time and eventually, things will fall in place.

In an interview, you mentioned that it is important for you to be a good and responsible artist. What did you mean?
Yes, I think it’s very important to be responsible for us being an artist, even as a responsible individual and send the right message out there in society, fans and everyone listening to us. It should be a very conscious attempt for being responsible as to when we create music or song. After all, it create an impact across the country and now as we have been so advanced in technology even kids are accessible to listen to our songs. They might not understand the meaning of lyrics but they sing in and out so I feel I have to be responsible while choosing the right words and the impact they can create on society as a whole.

If given a chance to sing and act in a music video, with whom would Jubin like to pair and why?
I have been singing and acting in latest my music videos. Recently, I worked with Mouni Roy in a music video ‘Dil Galati’ and tried dancing for the very first time, something out of my comfort zone and was nervous as well, but in all, it was great.
