Akash Thosar is the innocent college student of Lust Stories, who is attracted to his professor and is also the boy-next-door of the National Award-winning film Sairat.
Today, web and online media is the biggest obsession. How do you handle challenges and competition?
To be frank, to date, I have never felt that wave of competition and challenges, reason being I am too naive in the industry and I have a long way to go. So, instead of soaking myself in the rain of worries and insecurities, I am trying to polish my skills and learn from everyone. Acting is not a one-day thing that you can learn overnight, it takes time and the zeal. For now, I am busy nurturing myself and rest it all lies in the destiny. And I believe that the best one should always win the game.
Tell us about your first professional experience of facing the camera?
It all started at a railway station, where Bharat Manjule, brother of Sairat director Nagraj Manjule spotted me and asked me to come for the audition. I always wanted to me meet Nagraj ji, I am a huge fan of his work. He asked me to perform something in front of the camera after which I was told that they will get back to me. And soon I was called for the look test and I was selected. On the first day of the shoot, I was scared and it was a running sequence that I had to perform. Before I could understand that whether I did a good job or not Nagraj ji said, great job!
Social media is still a democratic and non-censored platform of entertainment. Comment.
I am active on social media and I feel it’s the best way to connect with the audience and get the immediate feedback. I feel the young writers and filmmakers know what the audience wants and they are creating similar content, and that’s the reason they are being liked. Everything they add to the content has logic and is justified. It has minimized the need for censorship and it’s a good thing.
Sex is still a taboo in India. Do you think web series can make a difference in this direction?
It has already made a difference. It is not just because of the web medium but also because of the time. The dynamic nature of time makes the life interesting and I guess the same rule applies here. Today, the audience is educated and well-aware about what they want and the filmmakers also understand the needs. It is a two-way process and the new-age media has brought the two pillars (filmmakers and audience) closer and that’s the reason for the change.
What’s your take on nepotism in the entertainment industry?
I am too naive to pass any comment on the matter. One thing is for sure, if you have that spark, you will have it and the energies will guide you in the right direction. Every fraternity has hurdles and distractions; it is up to you, what you want to focus on- goal or commotions.
Every actor has a mentor, who teaches the nuances of reel life. Who is your guru and how he/she has impacted your career?
In life, my parents had been my biggest and closest mentors. Even today, when I feel I am stuck in a situation, I share it with my father and he guides me the right path. In terms of profession, Nagraj Manjule (ji) had been my support system. The best part is, he observes my work and wherever he feels I am going off the track, he interrupts and guides me further. I feel I am blessed to have him around and can’t thank him enough for his immense faith in me.
