The Lens Man Pushkar Hans

Meet Pushkar Hans, the creative eye of Pushkar Hans Photography and Films who finds it a blissful life surrounded by still photography and commercial filmmaking between Delhi and Mumbai. For the young creative mind, who believes in his dreams, it’s been a learning experience where work has always been his priority and going further, he wishes to widen his wings. In a quick chat with TMM, Pushkar shares a slice of his success journey that is built around names like Taj Group, Max Group, Max Towers, Tata Housing,  Nike and Looks Salons to name a few.

Pushkar hansHow did photography happen to you?
I always wanted to study mass communication but was a bit confused about the difference between journalism and mass communication and that’s when Bachelor’s in Mass Communication at IP University happened to me. And during the course of time, I realized that visual communication is my thing. To take it slow I started with event photography and later assisted DOPS and filmmakers to understand the in-depth work strategy in the field, as I was keen into going towards the commercial angle of it. Later, I did a separate course of visual communication in Jamia and further did my MA from Guru Jambeshwar University. Today, while I am working in the commercial market, I plan to pursue PhD in the near future because taking guest lectures at my alumni colleges have made me understand the need of hour and I am all game for it.

Tell us about your first professional project.
Ever since I started this journey, I have been sponsoring my education and even registered my company with my own hard-earned money, but I feel the first stepping stone for me happened in 2012, Max Group became my first big client and ever since the work bond with them has gone stronger. I guess that bond is special for a lifetime.

Every artist has some inspiration that works as the guiding force. What keeps you going, Pushkar Hans?
I am a keen observer and I have this habit way before photography happened to me as a career. I love to observe people, nature, and every single element and try to blend it with my personal aesthetics. Whether it’s a fashion editorial shoot or an interior brand shoot, every project has a personal perspective which I blend with the client’s briefing and I guess that makes my work stand out.

Pushkar Hans PhotographyTell us about the most challenging and memorable project you did till date.
In 2016, I was approached by an author, who wanted me to shoot his book cover. While the adverse conditions and circumstances left me all panic a night before the shoot, which was scheduled to take place at a Delhi-based resort, I had to call the client at midnight and inform him about the situation. And interestingly, he was kind enough to understand the crisis and gave me abundant time to reschedule the shoot and look for another location. A few days later, the final shoot took place in a way-smaller space, pool to be precise and then the magic took place at the editing table where we invested more than 22 hours to achieve the set goal. And the end result was well-received as the final book cover. I guess that episode will always be with me because it made me equipped with working with calmness in extremely adverse situations too.

In the creative field, we always hear complaints about untimely payment and there is also a debate about what is right fee. What do you have to say?
I personally feel it all depends upon how you project yourself and your work. Even if you are new in the industry, maintaining professionalism always makes it easy. I think proper documentation of every deal makes it an easy process for both parties and work becomes smoother. From mood board to stages of payment, everything should be clearly mentioned and dealt with for an effective and long-term relationship.

What do you think about the trend of mobile photography and micro-blogging?
It is making the world a beautiful place, where people are exploring beauty in every element and I think that’s the beauty of photography. I agree that the nuances can’t be dealt with mobile photography, but it’s doing any harm to the creativity. There are times, we get to know some really amazing perspectives on micro-blogging sited created and conceptualized by young minds and it surely deserves appreciation.

While the pandemic has affected every industry, what is keeping you motivated and your blueprint for the coming years?
(Laughs) To be very frank, 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 is going to be all about survival. For now, I am trying to retain my clients and complete the commitments and if something new comes up will surely jump into the pool and make the best of the opportunity. I have no set plans for now, as COVID has shattered everything, so I am trying to be with the flow and wait for the right time.
