I’m one of those food travellers that will go anywhere for food. My cousin left a comment on my food album about Phillys cheesesteak. I was so curious I went on to google the thing, it’s a steak sandwich cooked in melted cheese with green peppers.
As this particular sandwich was an American thing finding it London was going to be tricky. Lucky for me i managed to track down the meatwagon, the photos on flickr was enough to make me drool.
The meatwagon was previously at new cross before setting up a temporary pop up kitchen at the rye in Peckham. Peckham is not an area you want to go alone, so I managed to drag my friends with me.
In the middle of nowhere, in a ghost town the rye pub sits in between the roads, inside the interior felt like a undone home. Walls been stripped, grey painted colours old furnishing and art hanging. The menu is presented on a chalkboard and I was almost in tears to see phillys cheesesteak crossed out with out, that soon disappeared when the waitress said I can still order it.
Roughly ten mins on my phillys cheesesteak came out. I brought myself a bottle of coke for £2.50 from the pub. I was excited to see the steak, the cheese was still oozing and dripped as I picked it up and trying to figure how to eat the thing. It was delicious the meat was cooked well, and wasn’t chewy, the cheese wasn’t overpowering I barely tasted the red peppers used. I also brought chips to accompany the phillys cheesesteak. The bun,dud not feel to heavy and went well with the meat. The chips was perfect not a drop of oil as I picked up each piece to munch, soft and a slight crunch.
The phillys cheesesteak cost £8 and the fries was £3. Go there with friends, I want to go try the burgers next.
