Traditionally hosted on the first Monday of May and seeing hundreds of A list celebrities attend, The Met Gala will, for the first time ever, be held as a virtual event.
Given that this year was supposed to be the Metropolitan Museum’s 150th anniversary, the theme was titled About Time: Fashion and Duration, and was meant to showcase the journey of fashion from 1870, the year the museum was founded, to present times. The Met Gala is a fundraiser for the annual fashion exhibit curated by the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion department, the Costume Institute, which is the only curatorial department within the museum that has to fund itself. Although the Met Gala may be postponed this year, this is also a chance for the greater public to get a behind the scenes look into the ongoings of it for the first time ever.
The live stream on the Met’s Instagram highlighted some of the most memorable and iconic Met Gala red-carpet looks of all time, featuring stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and more. The virtual Met Gala will also provide a glimpse into this year’s Costume Institute exhibition will showcase 120 looks dating back to 1870. Starting with an address by Anna Wintour, the virtual event was followed by a performance by Florence Welsh of Florence and the Machine and a DJ set by Off-White and Louis Vuitton men’s designer Virgil Abloh for the afterparty.
In commemoration of this highly anticipated event, here are some of our favourite looks from past Met Gala’s.
