Born in Los Angeles, California, 47 year old James Perse had a childhood of beaches, hockey rinks and of course, his father Tommy Perse’s highly curated Maxfield boutique. Thanks to the elder Perse’s embrace of all black, cutting edge looks from Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons, Maxfield became a Los Angeles fashion institution in the early 1980s. As a result, junior Perse managed to live a life of incidental fashion education of both European and Asian influences, modern architecture, furniture design and purist aesthetics.
Starting with a baseball cap obsession, James Perse helped his father create the ideal cap until in 1994, he launched a line one of the world’s most expensive t-shirts and tank tops (famously chronicled by NYT) which rapidly gained loyal fans looking for a seamless blend of luxe and casual. A scant two years later, his brand of West Coast-inspired aesthetics was parlayed into his namesake collection of women’s knits, which soon developed into a wearable collections; he added a menswear line to his collection in 1998. Close to two decades later, the astute fashion designer is bringing his simple, laid-back sophistication to a minimalist private resort.
The Minimalist: James Perse EC-01 Private Estate Resort
For me, the best way to spend a Sunday in Cabos is to take it easy in my hotel room—with room service, of course. The chef at Las Ventanas makes the best scrambled eggs with Mexican cheese, fresh guacamole, and Pico de Gallo, with homemade corn tortillas. It goes perfectly with a glass of the resort’s delicious fresh juices. – James Perse, Rosewood conversations
The EC-01 Private Resort is what results when a designer’s vision of minimalist garments shapes his passion for warm west-coast indoor outdoor architecture. James Perse’s personal design philosophy – low maintenance high fashion; and fashion – comfortable sophistication, is applied to every inch of the EC-01 private estate.
Located in Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, the luxury full-service resort and residence is James Perse’s first designed home. The highly exclusive EC-01 resort comes with its own private beach, and five highly private villa-suites along with an open-air fitness studio for anything from yoga sessions to massages. Perse’s iconic west-coast style and visionary approach is best encapsulated by the palapa-style shelter offering a minimalist surf sanctuary complete with jacuzzi and infinity pool. Like all good luxury resorts, James Perse’s EC-01 private residences come with a round-the-clock dedicated butler and chef and of course, his namesake boutique should you have neglected to pack certain wardrobe essentials.
