Radhika Iyer Talati underwent a life-changing experience when she beat Cancer, not just once but twice – once in 2004 and again in 2009. The second time it happened, she decided to opt for the natural way and healed herself through diet, exercise, and meditation. “My tumours started reducing and finally disappeared – something that was a miracle!” says the enterprising lady who is an entrepreneur, yogini and avid mountaineer. Tell us about the perspective, you gained from your tryst with the Big C the second time around?

What helped in this process, I feel, is this unwavering trust in both the doctor (Dr Pankaj Dabhi) and his method. My faith in natural medicine is intact even after 12 years. It was these illnesses that elevated me and took me on a journey of self-realization. My tryst with bad health bought me face to face with the magical Himalayas that I have frequented every single year post-2009, where I was sent to recuperate. It was this disease that broke me and rebuilt me and helped me become a better mother, a more creative entrepreneur, and an even more beautiful human being.

Mountaineering happened to me after I went to the Himalayas, as suggested by my naturopath. While I was going there only for a month-long therapeutic treatment; I ended up staying 4.5 months, serving at Baba Dhuninath’s ashram. My spiritual experiences in the Himalayas, the human connections I forged, things I learned – I was hooked to the Himalayas instantly. I felt like I had come home. It’s been 11 years and I have gone every year since then.
You became an avid mountaineer and even your children have accompanied you on some of your adventures…
2014: Mt. Kilimanjaro was a life-changing event, not just for me but for my entire family. It was my first trek outside India and I was taking my three children with me. The vista, the mountains, the locals, the culture- everything about Africa is magical. It made my kids much closer; not only to me but to each other and taught us the importance and beauty of nature. I will forever remember the struggles and challenges of climbing (especially since my son was only 11) and the surreal feeling of summiting the climb. I think it allowed me to share my love for mountaineering with my children. To this day, they love the mountains and have told me multiple times how grounded and happy it has made them. They understand now that the best moments in life come from the stillness of body and mind.

How did the idea of Anahata come to you? Tell us about the brand philosophy and products.
Anahata came to me first and foremost from my teachers. They taught me that to be healthy and fit, I had to work not only on my body weight but also on what I put inside and on my body. Anahata is a brand that focuses on solving root causes for skin problems, gut problems, and overall body health. We also have a very big focus on sustainability, because a sustainable future is simply the only way forward for us as a species.
Currently, Anahata has two types of product categories; Food and Beauty. The reason that we have both food and beauty under the same brand is that nothing happens in isolation. To get the healthy, glowing skin you have to also work on having healthy, efficient gut health. Anahata’s products work for long-term results, so that your body doesn’t have to do the work to keep temporarily fixing itself again and again. Some of our star products are the Kumkumadi Tailam which is a Vedic night serum, the Acne Fighter which is an all-natural overnight acne solution, and the Joint Pain Relief Oil, a beautiful concoction of medicinal herbs. Our baby range, Hridaya, is also an all-exclusive organic range that works to create good health systems in place for children, which also happens to be the best time to start taking care of ourselves: at infancy.

What, in your opinion, is the way ahead for a sustainable future and wellness, both of mind and body? How do you hope to contribute to that?
According to me, sustainability should be the new game plan. Our Earth has gone through an immense amount of destruction and toxins and we have no positive future-forward if we do not work to reverse the damage we have done. I think brands are now starting to realize this too, which is why the field of sustainable brands is growing. I think that the consumers are also getting more knowledgeable about the need for environment-friendly products.
One way I can contribute to this field is through my brand Anahata. I believe Anahata is doing some incredible work in working with and encouraging small-scale organic farming, finding eco-friendly packaging, and teaching our audience about sustainability. In the future, I want to continue to work in the sustainable farming sector. Another way I contribute to this future is by sharing my thoughts and ideas with my yoga students, children, friends, and patients that come to me for counselling. To build a sustainable future, at the very base level, there needs to be a behavioural change. We humans need to decide to look for a more sustainable product. I hope to continue this work on a larger scale too.
