Next month, the celebration of design, art and craftsmanship, DesignArt Tokyo, will return for its second year with more than 80 venues across the city taking part. Running from 19th to 28th October, 2018, this 10-day festival will give a unique insight into the latest design, art, fashion, technology and food creations in Japan’s creative culture.
Drawing attention to items that enhance our everyday lives through function and beauty, this citywide celebration of design showcases the work of established and emerging artists and designers, along prominent brands, from around Japan as well as from across the world, amounting to more than 200 participants.
Anticipated exhibits include the first large-scale public commission and collaboration between contemporary artists Akira Fujimoto and Yuko Nagayama, and a special exhibition created to commemorate 150 years of friendship and diplomatic relations between Japan and Sweden.
Exhibits spanning both traditional industries and contemporary craftsmanship will be hosted by restaurants, cafes and boutiques as well as galleries and studios, making the festival an exceptional way to delve into Tokyo’s art and design scene while getting to know the city.
Commenting on the upcoming event, co-founder of DesignArt Tokyo, Akio Aoki says: “Our aim is to enrich people’s lives by combining design and art into one tangible work, ‘designart’. DesignArt Tokyo is the catalyst for that movement. The festival is not an end but a means to carry out our mission to revitalize design and art as a cultural beacon and creative industry in Japan.”
Mark Dytham, another of the festival’s co-founders, continues: “Tokyo is one of a handful of cities in the world where architecture, interior design, fashion, art, graphic design, technology, food, and more combine into a cultural mixture that attracts people from all over the world. Through design, our aim is to spark a creative revolution, bringing a diverse array of people together across a wide variety of fields to engage in creative dialogue and design discourse.”
Placing Tokyo’s position as a creative hub on the world stage, this festival highlights the talent, tradition, innovation and inspiration that Tokyo is so renowned for.
