Editor’s Notes: Debating the most iconic sneakers of all time could take you all day (or a lifetime) but predicting which silhouettes and colorways might make it into that debate may prove an easier task. For the well-versed sneakerhead, the Nike Air Jordan 1 “Bred” probably comes to mind.
Designed in 1984 by Peter Moore following Michael Jordan‘s signing with Nike, the Air Jordan 1 is one of the most recognizable sneakers ever made. With each moment in spectacle within MJ’s career came colorways to commemorate them, providing fans with no only neck-breaking sneakers, but a piece of history.
If you’re familiar with the history of the AJ1’s, you’ll know this to be particularly true of the “Bred” colorway. The black and red combo found fame when Jordan continued to wear the pair on the court, despite breaking the NBA’s uniform policy. Although widely known as “Bred,” the story behind the colorway led to the name “Banned.”
This particular colorway of the AJ1 has been updated many times, with each release proving its merit as a classic. For its latest reimagining, patent leather fills the upper for a premium finish.
The Nike Air Jordan 1 High OG “Patent Bred” follows a standard set by pairs like the “UNC Patent Leather” and “Fearless,” leading us to wonder what other patent treatments Nike may have up its sleeve.
