Need a last-minute plan this weekend? You’re in luck. The Point, a Relais & Châteaux property on Saranac Lake in Upstate New York (and a regular in Elite Traveler’s Top 100 Hotels) is hosting an exclusive tasting for bourbon aficionados this weekend March 1 to 3 with sought-after bourbon brand, Pappy Van Winkle.
If you haven’t been to this glorious retreat (built by the Rockefellers in the 1930s), there’s no better place to spend a winter’s weekend. It’s a hideaway tucked within the Adirondack wilderness whose log cabin exterior and rustic-chic furnishings is ideal for city slickers yearning for a sense of quietness. Of course, cozy rustic furnishings, always-blazing fireplaces and the smell of pine year-round only adds to its charm.
This weekend, Preston Van Winkle, great-grandson of founder Julian ‘Pappy’ Van Winkle, will lead you throughout a whiskey-filled weekend. Upon arrival (we recommend booking the largest of the 11 accommodations, The Boathouse), retreat your cabin before joining Preston and guests for dinner. He’ll explain the history of Pappy Van Winkle and discuss each bourbon before you indulge in a dinner-bourbon pairing. The Point’s executive chef Loic Leperlier is creating a special menu specifically designed for bourbon pairings, as well as Pappy cocktails made exclusively for this weekend.
On Saturday, Preston will guide you through a full tasting with special Pappy Van Winkle vintages, such as the Reserve 23 and other bottles that are near-impossible to get your hands on. That night, enjoy a black-tie dinner with Pappy cocktails and special wine pairings while mingling with fellow guests. On Sunday, take time to explore the grounds, partake in some winter activities (ice skating, curling or simply walking around the estate is lovely this time of year). You’ll spend your last night with Preston and the Pappy team with another delicious dinner.
One thing’s for certain: This weekend you’ll see why they call Pappy Van Winkle ‘the best bourbon you can buy.’ This certainly is the type of weekend many have on his or her bucket list.
