Last night the World’s 50 Best Bars were revealed at a lavish ceremony in London. Ranked by an Academy of over 500 industry experts from 50 countries, these annual awards are considered the definitive list of global drinking destinations, bringing together the bars that set themselves apart on a worldwide scale. For the first time, the American Bar at London’s iconic hotel The Savoy came in at number one, also claiming the award for Best Bar in Europe.
Restaurant bars, speakeasies and the bars of hotels are all included in the eclectic list, with this year’s collection encompassing venues from as many as 24 cities across 19 different countries. Seven new entries joined the entries this year, and London retained the position of cocktail capital with eight bars in the World’s 50 Best Bars awards, four taking a place in the top 10 and three of London’s hotel bars in the top five.
Dandelyan in London, which sits within the Mondrian Hotel, came in at number two, then the NoMad in New York took the third highest spot. The Connaught Bar at London’s Connaught Hotel followed in fourth place, and New York favorite the Dead Rabbit, which took the top spot last year, came in at number five.
Of the other awards presented on the night, Iain Griffiths of London’s Dandelyan and White Lyan was named the Bartender’s Bartender, Black Pearl in Melbourne was named Legend on the List, and BlackTail in New York took the award for Best New Opening.
While London proved to be the city that stood out most, the USA is the country with the most bar inclusions. A total of 13 North American bars made the list; seven of these are in New York but San Francisco, Miami and Chicago also made an impression.
