The Tale of an Artisan Gunmaker – Purdey Guns and Rifles

With a history as fascinating and intricate as its bespoke rifles, it doesn’t take long to see why Purdey Gun and Rifles Makers has held numerous royal warrants and is still thriving after two centuries in business.

The tale of James Purdey reads almost like a classic. From apprenticing for expert gunsmith Joseph Manton in 1798, to his first meeting with Queen Victoria and the invention of the Hammer Ejector gun, excellence was the perpetual prey.

Richard Purdey, a direct descendant of James Purdey, says he set an unparalleled standard in artisan gun making, since the company opened its doors in 1814.

“It was James Purdey’s whole ambition to build the very best,” explains Purdey. “The Purdey Way was uncompromising, with the focus absolutely on quality and doing it right.”

This year the company celebrates its bi-centenary and continuing success. To commemorate 200 years of sporting excellence, Purdey has produced a trio of highly collectable guns, available to view by appointment.

The Purdey Bicentenary Trio – along with a limited edition book – is a tribute to past achievements and the ongoing legacy of the sterling British gunmaker.
