The Wick Theatre is kicking off the early theater season with the Broadway classic, Hello, Dolly! On stage from November 5 through December 6, the Tony Award-winning musical comedy takes the idea of matchmaking and turns it on its head.
The indomitable Dolly Levi, a self-described “meddler,” widow, and matchmaker, heads to New York City to find her cantankerous client, Horace Vandergelder, a wife. Adventure and mayhem ensues as love and lust bubble to the surface, all devised by the opportunistic Dolly, whose subplot of moving on with her life helps her find love again.
Based on Thornton Wilder’s farce The Merchant of Yonkers (later retitled The Matchmaker), the 1964 Broadway hit has music and lyrics by Jerry Jerman, and a book by Michael Stewart, featuring some of theater’s most memorable songs, like “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” and namesake “Hello, Dolly!” The Wick’s production will feature a Hello, Dolly! veteran, Lee Roy Reams, who not only has director and choreographer credits to his name for the musical revival, but has also played the part of Cornelius Hackl. For this rendition, Reams will don the dress and take up the role as Dolly Levi herself. Playing the role of Horace Vandergelder is veteran actor Lewis J. Stadlen, who appeared in Larry David’s Fish in the Dark on Broadway last season. Joined on stage by a collection of theater veterans and relatively new faces, this show promises to be one of the shining moments of the early 2015-16 theater season.
