After multiple breakups and makeups, singer Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are done for good. The Biebs officially went off the market when he married model Hailey Baldwin in September 2018. Of course, before there was Mr. and Mrs. Beiber, there was Jelena and fans are not quick to forget their tumultuous love story. Take a look back at their roller-coaster romance.
2009 — Love at First Sight?
The pair first met back in 2009, the year the young pop star broke out onto the music scene with tracks like “One Time” and “One Less Lonely Girl.” In December 2010, the duo sparked romance rumors when they shared a meal at IHOP and left the restaurant walking arm-in-arm. The Wizards of Waverly Place actress insisted they weren’t a couple, telling Us Weekly, “[Justin] is one of my best friends … It was just pancakes!”

Early 2011 — It’s Official!
In January, the two could no longer deny that they were dating, as they were spotted kissing while vacationing in St. Lucia, and at Vanity Fair‘s Oscar party on Feb. 27, they arrived together and walked the red carpet.
2011 – 2012 — Smitten Kittens
Things were smooth sailing for the two during the first phase of their romance, often holding hands and sharing kisses in public, whether it was in the audience at award shows or front-row at basketball games. Aww!
November 2012 — Their First Split
Jelena shippers everywhere cried their hearts out when the pair called it quits, blaming their busy schedules. “It’s such a public thing. It’s just hard for the both of us,” Justin shared. “But you know, she’s a great woman. I love her [to] this day.”
April 2013 — Back On!
The two seemed to have made up, with Biebs sharing an Instagram of Selena hugging him — though he quickly deleted the photo. Just one month later, they were caught kissing backstage, but this time around, the two decided to keep mum on their relationship.
2013 – 2014 — Ups and Downs
All was good between the pair for the rest of 2013, but by next summer, rumors of a split began making the rounds. Unfortunately, the duo hit another bump in the road by the end of 2014, and Selena hinted at their breakup with the release of her track, “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” Just a few weeks later, JB unfollowed the songstress on Instagram. Around the holidays, the singer’s now-wife accompanied him on vacation, though the singer had previously stated, “I’m super single and [Hailey] is my good friend.” However, Justin eventually posted a photo of the two kissing, but they ended up fizzling out quickly.
2015 — Time Apart
In March, Selena briefly dated Zedd, who collaborated on her track “I Want You to Know.” While Selena didn’t comment on the fling at the time, she later confirmed that she and Zedd, “definitely had a thing.”
For most of the year, the Spring Breakers star and Justin kept their distance, yet felt comfortable talking about their relationship to the media. “There’s closure in a very good, healthy way. Starting at the end of 2015, the pair stepped out together more than once, but they insisted that this time around, things were strictly platonic. “We don’t talk often, but we’re cordial. If she needs something, I’m there for her,” Biebs explained. “If I need something, she’s there for me.” Justin also starts casually seeing Kourtney Kardashian, though they never seemed to be an exclusive couple.
Summer 2016 — More Turmoil

JB and Selena are once again caught by each other’s side, and it’s said that he had reached out to her after learning about her health crisis. Multiple outlets report that The Weeknd was aware of their outings, but wasn’t worried about Selena straying. However, the very next day, it’s confirmed that he and Selena ended their 10-month romance.
November 2017 — Loved Up
Following her breakup, Selena started spending more time with Justin again. Though they kept their lips zipped, they were seen out together on several occasions, whether it was a giggly bike ride in the park or a visit to church. Selena has also been spotted at several of Justin’s hockey games, often leaving the rink wearing his jersey.
January 2018 — Family Matters
The two have never officially confirmed they’re back together — but Selena’s mom still isn’t a fan of the reunion, and it was said to have put somewhat of a strain on their relationship. The couple spent Valentine’s Day together and were spotted multiple times out together. She even attended Justin’s dad’s wedding in Jamaica.
March 2018 — Going Strong and Then …
Selena seemingly took her romance with Justin public on March 1 by wishing him a happy birthday in a now-deleted post. “March 1, 1994 someone I know that happens to be super cool was born. Boom,” the caption read. However, one week later, E! reported that the A-listers had “a lot of little disagreements” that led to another split. The final nail in the coffin was the “Sorry” singer spotted out with Sports Illustrated model Baskin Champion in April.
June 2018 — And Then There Was Hailey
Justin and Hailey were spotted attending church together in Miami and start dating again.
July 2018 — Wedding Bells
News surfaced on July 7 that the Biebs got down on one knee and proposed to the blonde beauty in the Bahamas. Although the couple didn’t formally announce the news, Justin’s dad hinted at his son’s engagement the next day on Instagram. “[Justin], proud is an understatement! Excited for the next chapter!” he wrote.
September 2018 — Stepping Away
Justin and Hailey legally tied the knot at a courthouse in New York on September 13. Selena also announced that she’s taking a break from social media. “As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given,” she wrote on Instagram. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings.”
October 2018 — Rough Patch
The next couple of months was tough for the former Disney kid. A source exclusively told Life & Style that the singer — who suffers from lupus — “felt her life was spiraling out of control” after being hospitalized for a low white blood cell count. She then checked into a mental health facility in NYC where she stayed for a month before heading home to Los Angeles.
A source told Us Weekly at the time that Justin was “praying” for his ex but moving on with his bride. “For Justin, there’s always going to be a soft spot in his heart for Selena. Because you don’t just stop loving someone and caring about someone, especially when they’re going through a difficult time like she is, but he’s still totally infatuated with Hailey and he’s made Hailey his priority,” the source explained. A month later, the model followed and unfollowed a Selena fan account on Instagram which was high-key awk.
March 2019 — Justin Loses It
The Canadian stud snapped back at a fan who said that he married Hailey to “get back” at Selena. “Anyone who believes this is mean-spirited or 10 years old or younger because a logical person doesn’t talk or think this way. You should be ashamed of yourself, really. I absolutely loved and love Selena,” he wrote in a lengthy comment on Instagram.
Justin added, “She will always hold a place in my heart, but I am head over heels in love with my wife and she is absolutely the BEST THING that has ever happened to me, period.”
April 2019 — Hailey Is Over It, Too
Fans spotted in an Instagram Story that there was a video of Selena performing at Coachella on Justin’s browser history. “You little internet kiddos need to learn how to move on for real,” Hailey clapped back at all the negative attention her hubby was receiving.
Justin also weighed in. “That video of Selena singing ‘Taki Taki’ came up after my wife and I watched my Coachella performance,” he wrote on Instagram. “Obviously she’s gonna be in the related category, it [literally] was the next video that played … to fans and people who think I’m maliciously trying to start s—t grow up.”
June 2019 — Final Traces
Selena quietly deleted her birthday post for her ex from the year before. A clean Instagram equals a clean slate, right?
September 2019 — A Truce?
Hailey received backlash after posting a friendly comment on the Instagram account of Courtney Lopez — one of Sel’s BFFs. Some people called her a “queen of drama” while others claimed that she was “obsessed” with the “Wolves” singer. However, others took this as a sign that there may be peace between the ladies.
October 2019 — Justin and Hailey Walk Down the Aisle (Again)
Over one year after getting married, the husband and wife hosted a luxe wedding in South Carolina for their family and friends. The model admitted that marriage has gotten “easier” for them over the past year and they seem happier than ever.
As for Selena, a source told Us Weekly that she’s also doing A-OK. “Selena knows she’s better off without Justin, and that it’s the healthiest option for her,” the insider dished. “She is open to dating, but right now she is solely focused on herself and enjoying life to the best of her ability and getting back to being the Selena that she and all of her close ones knew prior to dating Justin.”
Selena got the final word in with her new song “Lose You to Love Me,” which was released on October 22. Fans think the emotional ballad is about her relationship with Justin, and the lyrics are a bit coincidental. The second verse reads: “I gave my all and they all know it/You turned me down and now it’s showing/In two months, you replaced us/Like it was easy/Made me think I deserved it/In the thick of healing, yeah.” We’ll let you be the judge on that one.
