Plush fabrics with relaxed silhouettes dominate Giorgio Armani’s latest men’s collection, which is all about doing business – comfortably.
Giorgio Armani’s autumn/winter 2020 men’s collection solves one of mankind’s age-old conundrums — that workwear is generally a little stiff and formal, and far from as comfortable as your weekend style.
With work-from-home policies abounding, a more relaxed attitude towards workwear has become more prevalent. As Zoom calls become the predominant format for business meetings, it’s only natural that society has decided to eschew the sleek and fitted aesthetic for less rigid silhouettes that are as stylish as they are soft and fluid.
The suits from this collection are roomy and relaxed, yet still sing with the precision tailoring signature to the house of Armani. Nehru-collared jackets approach the comfort level of cardigans, while shawl collars decorate oversize overcoats and outerwear is the love child of an expensive coat and a very nice blanket.
There is an art to a baggy, slouchy trouser, and here is the pinnacle – each example, from an everyday wool work pant to a pinstriped riff on a ski bottom – is cut for freedom of movement, and for that secure feeling of being swaddled in fabric, without sacrificing its wearer’s stature.
Tones remain neutral, with shades of brown, black and earthy khakis dominant, though enriched by plush materials and clashes of texture and geometric pattern. There is an overwhelming desire to touch everything, from forest-green velvet coordinates to shiny, boucle wool coats – no wonder the collection is named “Tactile Impressions”.
What’s also difficult for photographs to capture is the elegant ripple of fabric that will undoubtedly elicit a frisson of excitement from any man who appreciates the movement of an ensemble. It is present in each look, a true feat of technical tailoring. If 2020 is about going with the flow, this is the kind of flow we can get on board with.
Backstage of the show at the Armani Teatro, as the models readied themselves to take to the catwalk, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were witnessing the world’s chicest pajama party, such is the comfort level of the menswear – but with the accompanying shiny leather shoes and structural men’s bags in luxe leathers like alligator, there’s no denying this collection means business. And this is the kind of business we accept with pleasure.
