Brand: Carhartt WIP
Season: Fall/Winter 2021
Key Pieces: Plush fleece jackets, pants, and gloves are a neat riff on a casual favorite. However, the hooded corduroy jacket, pigment-dyed hoodies, and reworked Detroit jackets are properly progressive revisions to the familiar formula.
Buy: Carhartt WIP
Editor’s Notes: What would you expect from Carhartt WIP besides wearable workwear in streamlined cuts? Well, clever functional fashion is certainly not too much to ask for and the brand comes in swinging for FW21 with a bevy of accessible items ideal for accenting your usual winterwear. Functional garms always dress up best in cooler climes, anyways.
You’ll see an ample array of hardy fabrics throughout the new collection, pushed and pulled enough to distinguish them from conventional Carhartt fare. There’s thick corduroy, dyed duck canvas, insulating flannel, washed denim, and thick wool throughout the FW21 lineup, realized in moody tones informed by the earthly world. Grounded goods are a Carhartt signature; don’t expect and fancy pants here.
Not that the collection is as dry as the clay that partially inspired the palette, by any means! There are plenty of subtle experiments on hand, classic items revised with contemporary nuance. WIP prefers these subtle flips to ostentatious presentations, anyways.
For instance, chore coats and aprons are enlivened with tonal color-blocking, while surprisingly cozy knit cardigans and sweaters are laden with intarsia stripes and text, a visual homage to old school collegiate style. Elsewhere, inspiration from a pair of vintage double-knee pants translates into a series of revised trousers, ranging from reinforced cargo shapes to all-purpose overalls.
