Wooloomooloo Prime Unveils A New Look and Fresh Menu

We admit it, we’re not the first to fling ourselves aboard Hong Kong’s inimitable Star Ferry and head out across the harbour for food. But, after dinner at the newly renovated Wooloomooloo Prime – it’s on floor 21 of The ONE in TST – there’s one more good reason to make the trip.

Space-wise, this is no intimate restaurant. The chic bar that opens on to a terrace greets you first, before you roll round to the back and discover a wide restaurant. Flanked on three sides by windows that frame a view of Hong Kong Island, there’s no denying that on a clear evening this is a truly impressive dining spot.

We spent our Thursday night in the private room, with low lighting, comfortable seating and possibly Hong Kong’s sweetest General Manager, Max Rhodes, who took us through the new menu dish by dish. A flurry of plates arrived almost as soon as we’d settled down to a fancy G&T, so we didn’t waste any time getting stuck in.

Exclusive cuts are now a bigger draw for Wooloomooloo Prime than ever before, with a careful selection of the choicest meats on offer here and nowhere else. Highlights included Rhug Estate organic beef dry-aged for 45 days and a juicy Barnsley lamb chop. And though there’s definitely something to be said for going all-out for flesh, there’s also a range of alternatives – some new to the menu, some established favourites – that duly impressed our table.

The trout salad (it tastes better than it sounds) was a clever combination dish, as was the fresh Hokkaido scallop starter. Wooloomooloo Prime’s supreme truffle mash and a beautiful New Zealand salmon fillet – you could book an Uber over just for this – were too good not to mention. Desserts were well handled, too, but I wouldn’t save space, rather spend the added time (and expense – this ain’t cheap) on the main event.

We liked it, we’d go back, we’d order copiously. Anything that didn’t work? One or two of the serving staff clearly didn’t feel like cracking a smile over the course of our meal, which is always a shame, and we’d skip the side salads. Beyond that, Wooloomooloo Prime 2.0 gets a well-fed thumbs-up.
