Zakynthos Highlights: Top Things to do in Zante

Zakynthos has a lot to offer, from remarkable beaches and clear blue waters to the famous Navagio beach, picturesque village and delicious food. During our trip we saw it all. Our host Pigi of Zante Hotels 4 U made sure that we got a good taste of the island that caters to different types of travellers.

Explore the city center of Zakynthos

On our third day on Zakynthos we went to explore some of the monuments and churches located in the city centre of the island. Our first stop was the impressive church of Agios Dionysios which you can find just before you enter the port area.

Visit Agios Dionysios Church

Agios Dionysios was known as the Saint of Forgiveness, apparently he had forgiven a man who had killed his own brother and until today is considered as a great example of forgiveness of even the most grievous sins.

St. Dionysios rests in a tomb inside the church and it is believed that he still performs his miracles. His feast day is celebrated on the 17th of December, and on the 24th of August the Church celebrates the transfer of his holy relics.

We then passed the coastal stretch of Zakynthos’s most popular area lined with restaurants and bars. In case you missed my previous story read all about our authentic Zakynthian dinner at Varkarola here.

Walk around the  Solomos Square

Our next stop was at the Solomos Square which was named after the famous Greek poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek National Hymn. The museum dedicated to the poet is found on this square and houses his works.

Discover the tiny village of Bohali

We then went to Bohali which guarantees the best view on the island. The tiny village of Bohali is perched on a hill behind the town of Zakynthos and during the Venetian period this was an aristocratic district and remains so till today. Here you will find the ruins of the Venetian castle which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1953.

The view from Bohali

Here visitors can admire the view both during the day and at night. If you drive a little further down you will find yourself at the Strani’s Hill, the exact same place where Solomos was inspired and wrote the “Hymn to Freedom”. Here you will find the statue dedicated to him.

Spend a relaxing afternoon at Tragaki

In the afternoon we headed towards Amboula beach at Tragaki, where we swam, relaxed and had delicious lunch at the Ladofanaro. The taverna has a designated sunbeds and umbrellas area where guests can enjoy the beach and combine it with a relaxing lunch. For families with children there is a separate kids corner where the little guests can play while their parents are relaxing.

We had everything from a fresh mixed salad with orange flavour, Greek salad, cheeses, aubergines in red sauce, zucchini pies, pork and a traditional lamb dish cooked in earthenware. The view here is impeccable and so is the atmosphere.
