LifeStyle Goals — World’s Top, Best & Most Expensive Billionaire Vacation Playgrounds

LifeStyle Goals — World’s Top, Best & Most Expensive Billionaire Vacation Playgrounds

  • The very rich, are different. And perhaps no place is that more evident than in the anything-goes world of the billionaire’s vacation. The exclusivity of the travel experience — and that refers as much to the destination as to the choice in accommodations — is key to the billionaire’s holiday.
  • The high net worth [set] don’t want to holiday somewhere near the encatchment area where a low-cost carrier deplanes or embarks. They want to be as far away from the masses as possible. Think private islands, private estates and private villas — in short, places that have a limited supply of rooms that fill up months or years in advance.

Islands Apart: Where the Ultra-Rich Town Down

  • While commercial flights descend in droves upon mainstream Caribbean destinations like Montego Bay and Nassau, the ultra-rich touch down on private runways in far more remote locales.

Necker Island, British Virgin Islands

  • Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin business empire and investment group, owns Necker Island located in the British Virgin Islands. The 74-acre property is a preferred vacation destination by a lot of the rich and famous. Many lavish weddings and birthday parties have been held there. It’s also perfect for intimate affairs as the place only accommodates about 28 guests at a time. Not only is Necker Island (a 30-hectare island in the British Virgin Islands) Branson’s own private island and holiday home, but it’s also a place where other billionaires — and the Obamas — regularly choose to spend their downtime. For billionaires, privacy is key when vacationing, which is why the exclusive Necker Island is so appealing. Although the Necker Island resort is available to the general public, it costs around $5,000 a night, making it prohibitively expensive. If you can afford the price tag, then the Virgin Limited Edition property can offer guests a range of water sports (including Obama’s favorite, kitesurfing), diving, spa treatments, fine dining, infinity pools, tennis, yoga and more. If that’s a little too steep, the nearby island of Tortola, which is home to Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, could be a great way to enjoy a watered-down version of the billionaires’ holiday destination. Oprah Winfrey is among the many moneyed celebrities who have ventured onto Richard Branson’s Necker Island, a private island resort in the British Virgin Islands composed of a collection of Balinese-style abodes, set on 74 acres with a fringing coral reef, submarine available for charter and a 32-person Jacuzzi among the diversions. Exclusive rental rates for the property start from $42,500 per night for up to 16 people.
  • Who wouldn’t want to escape to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world? When he’s not traveling for work, Richard Branson, the Virgin Group founder — who is worth $5.1 billion, according to Forbes — heads to his private island in the British Virgin Islands.
  • Known for being a place where Branson and his celebrity pals can kick back and party, the island has hosted events ranging from Kate Moss?s 40th birthday party to the wedding of Google co-founder Larry Page. Branson bought Necker Island for $180,000 decades ago and has since turned it into a resort.
  • The all-inclusive property features a main house and six smaller houses, as well as pools, on-site dining, tennis courts and a disco DJ. Nightly rates vary by season, with rates for couples starting at around $4,390. Additionally, up to 34 guests can reserve the entire island for $80,000 per night.
  • In September 2017, Necker Island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma. Branson rode the hurricane out with family and friends in a wine cellar on the island. In a post-storm Twitter post, he revealed that many buildings were destroyed. The island is not currently accepting bookings online.

David Copperfield’s Musha Cay

  • The 100-acre paradise is owner by illusionist David Copperfield. It has only a few villas and can only accommodate a maximum of 24 guests at a time. Musha Cay also has a number of attractions, including an arcade, a drive-in movie theater, a treasure hunt (with real treasure!), and a laser tag arena.
  • And just a short private jet hop away, on the Out Islands of the Exumas in the Bahamas, is David Copperfield’s Musha Cay, with its stunning sandbar that materializes for just a few hours a day, open-air theater on the beach and 5 plantation-style guest houses — each hugging their own private beach. The property can accommodate up to 24 guests, with rates starting from $37,500 per night for up to 12 people.
  • The billionaire clientele drawn to oases like these more often than not opt for all the extras, too — perhaps a private fireworks display (offered for $25,000 at Musha Cay) or a rare vintage Champagne flown in on a whim from the mainland.

Laucala Island

  • Laucala Island was once owned by Forbes magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes. Since his passing, the property was purchased by Dietrich Mateschitz of the Red Bull Energy drink company. There are a limited number of villas, and each one can cost between $7,000 and $36,000 per night. Each villa has its own buggy, so guests can conveniently tour the island. There are also at least 25 butlers available to assist guests.
  • Half a world away in Fiji, the CEO of Red Bull owns another favorite private island frequented (and usually hired out in its entirety) by the billionaire set. Laucala Island is a largely sustainable property surrounded by coconut plantations and turquoise lagoons where each of the 25 butler-serviced villas has a full-size swimming pool and yoga pavilion.

Coco Prive Kuda Hithi

  • This private Maldivian island, which can only be reached via private seaplane, charges about $27,000 a night. The villas can only accommodate a total of 12 people at a time.
  • The island has its private chef, driving instructor, masseuse, and cleaning staff. There’s also a library, plus an outdoor bath stocked with high-quality oils and lotions.
  • And on the island of Kuda Hithi in the Maldives, guests arrive by private yacht at Coco Prive and have a personal dive master among their dedicated staff. There’s a master villa and 5 offshoot villas for a maximum of 12 guests, and rates for 2 people start from $8,000 per night.

Cottars 1920 Camp

  • For a safari adventure paired with a relaxing retreat, billionaires prefer Cottar’s 1920’s Camp and Cottar’s Homestead. Here, guests get luxury accommodations after going on Kenya’s safari tours. The camp has six grand tents that can house a group of 12 people. It is also located near the path of The Great Migration.
  • The sky is quite literally the limits at places like these. If you want to fly in your own Broadway cast to put on a production — and people do that — it might be extra. It’s All in the Destination … With a Few Perks. Some places that beckon the rest of us hither entice billionaires, too. Africa is hugely popular. These trips appeal as they typically include stays at small exclusive posh safari camps, and private planes are the standard mode of transfer. In an iconic African safari destination like Kenya, the uber-rich might choose to rent out an entire luxury camp such as Cottar’s 1920s Camp, with 10 decadent tents set in a private conservancy with its own landing strip near the Masai Mara. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, mere millionaires, commandeered the entire property for their entourage in 2009.

Cottar’s Homestead

  • But that was before the opening here of the even more exclusive Cottar’s Homestead — a 10,000-square-foot home with 5 bedrooms and terraces overlooking grasslands covered with wildebeest and serviced by a staff of 8, including a private wildlife driver and additional wildlife spotter, as well as a chef and security guards.

Superyacht Nirvana High Life on the High Seas

  • And if you’re wondering where mere millionaires really get culled from the billionaire’s domain, it’s at sea. Chartering a mega-yacht is really in the realm of the billionaire rather than just the standard millionaire. It’s potentially the most exclusive travel experience you can have. The mega-yacht class of ships — hired anywhere from $200,000 to $1 million per week — as where the opulence factor slips into the stratosphere. It’s like a floating mansion or palace basically, with the helipad, water toys, the private movie theater and a crew taking care of everything.
  • This superyacht was built by Oceanco and Sam Sorgiovanni. It can accommodate 39 people, but 27 of those are for a full crew. There’s a 3D-theater, a stage and dance floor, a full gym, and a spa, among other amenities. Guests arriving via helicopter can use the yacht’s own helipad.
  • And the superyacht Nirvana, inspires particular awe — the 6-deck, 290-foot-long ship hosts 12 guests, with a crew of 26 tending to their every whim and has such amenities as a 3-D cinema, full gym, multiple jet skis and water ski boats and 2 vivariums populated by water dragons and bearded lizards! The horizon is pretty much the limit on yachts like Nirvana. You’re in a completely private environment and you can go out in the middle of the ocean and hang out, go to a beautiful cove to have all to yourself, or dock in Monaco and get in a tux and go to the casino for the night.

Unites States

Laguna Beach

  • Warren Buffett: Laguna Beach : Residing in the same modest — by billionaire standards — Omaha home since 1958, Buffett does invest in the occasional vacation. Until he recently put his seaside property up for sale, Laguna Beach was the place where he and his family escaped to when it was time to take a break from business. When he bought the vacation home in 1971, the sunny California destination wasn’t quite the chic, moneyed spot it is today. These days, a mix of galleries, art festivals, serene coves and glorious beaches attract a well-heeled crowd. While Laguna Beach can undoubtedly feel exclusive, there’s nothing stopping anyone from visiting. (You might just not have the beachside home and private country club membership to go along with your trip.)

  • In the world of villa rentals, France delivers some of the most bespoke travel experiences for those who can afford it. Based in County Clare, the Spielbergs toured all over the country, taking in traditional music in the pubs, fish-and-chip dinners and bike riding on the Aran Islands. The director and screenwriter called the trip a “life-changing experience.” An Ireland tour is one of the more affordable vacations on this list, as it’s the beautiful landscape, the charm and the friendly people that are the biggest appeals.
  • Rural Ireland — It’s not a private island, but some billionaires, like filmmaker Steven Spielberg, prefer to vacation in rural Ireland. Along with family friend George Clooney, the former supermodel and her husband Rande Gerber sold their Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, compound for $100 million in 2016, according to TMZ.
  • The celebrity best buds are currently without a vacation home south of the border, but a bigger and better compound is already in the works. • Something that’s often overlooked when visiting French Polynesia is Tahiti itself. It’s used more as a launching pad than a destination, but travelers are making a crucial error by not spending at least a day exploring what the island has to offer.

Rangiroa

  • Rangiroa, a 45-minute flight due northwest from Tahiti’s Fa’a’ā International Airport, is an even smaller green dot on the map than Bora Bora, though it ranks as one of the largest atolls in the world. Its landscape is made up mostly of compact sandbars covered in coral.
  • Only two of Rangiroa’s motus (reef inlets covered in lush vegetation) are inhabited, meaning that less than 3,000 people permanently call the 558-square-miles of land home, which in turn makes you feel a bit like Gilligan and Ginger on your own deserted island (though really, it deserves more than a three-hour tour).
  • Upon arriving in Rangiroa there’s only one thing you must do: Find a local, get on their boat, and go diving.
  • Lurking below the surface are massive schools of fish and some fairly sizable black-tip reef sharks looking for a tasty morsel. At the Aquarium, locals and tourists gather from sun up to sun down to sit on their boats, play a little music, dive into the water, and share a laugh as a shark or two swim up for a visit.
