The 40th Anniversary Emporio Armani Autumn/Winter 2021 Collection
A socially distanced affair, Giorgio Armani digitally presented the 40th-anniversary, Emporio Armani autumn/winter 2021 show from his Via Borgonuovo headquarters, streaming it online for audiences from Paris to Tokyo and New York to New Delhi.
Followers of fashion clicked on to a collection that mixed the disco era of the late-’70s and early-’80s with the modern. A patina of hues accompanied his signature navy and all-black ensembles, emboldened by flashes and pops of colour with contemporary cuts, exquisite silhouettes, patterns and monochrome.
Filmed against a backdrop of the brand’s name writ in neon, the collection had all the signature pieces one expects from the legend; luxurious fabrications, glitter, leather, whimsical cuts and classic silhouettes, the pride, the peplum, the pinstripe, he showed it all. Models wearing knits with sequin borders, jacquard, suitings for women and loungewear tailoring for men.
For long loving, enduring fans of the brand, there were new graphic shapes, amplified colours, as well as reassuring crystals and glittering gowns – those most often seen on the red carpet of every award show. Pieces you’ll see again on Armani’s muses like Cate Blanchette, Julia Roberts and that A-list ilk; there’s a reason why he’s held the crown of “the king of the Hollywood red carpet” (Vanity Fair) since 1978, when he first dressed Diane Keaton. Movie stars and Armani go hand in velvet-gloved hand so when you see a black and white gown with glittering embellishments, you know Kidman will swan down the stage like he made it just for her.
No other designer of his vintage – Giorgio Armani turned 87 this past July – stands this tall, relevant and a force to be reckoned with. Trends come and go, tides rise and fall. Style is eternal and Armani is forever.

Possibly related to the Zoom-induced focus on waist-up dressing, the shirt has become the foundation for many a designer’s imagination.

Style Spotlight: Herringbone and Recycled Fabrics at Emporio Armani A/W 2020
Style director Jing Zhang breaks down some of our favourite menswear looks from Emporio Armani's Autumn/Winter 2020 presentation.
This show contained many collections wrapped up in one EA experience.
In the middle there was an EA7 aside (military skiwear) and at the end, a new R-EA (recycled Emporio Armani) sub-collection in which Armani presented presumably all-renewed, all-navy pieces of attractive, tactical streetwear.

Oversized baseball jacket/parka hybrids in scarlet herringbone wool were mixed with matching pants, oversized black notch-collar puffer jackets with buffalo-check pants, and evening-biker looks (in pleather) with fine red irregular herringbone and oversized gilet; there was also a turn to expressively progressive formalwear: black jackets etched with silver beads and suits in silver-etched pinstripe.
After that, we progressed through the recycled workwear of the final R-EA chapter.

The details
1. Herringbone emerged as a hero
2. Recycled fabrics and sustainable style in R-EA
3. Slick, aerodynamic black nylon and leather

The New Generation of EA
With high-impact sportswear crossed over with formalwear, Emporio Armani’s spring/ summer 2020 offering is powerful and punchy.
For the cooler, younger clientele, it starts with technical blousons, harnesses, parkas and tracksuits, and billowing white parachute silks on outfits for a sense of masculine drama. Shirts have drawstrings running at the hem, and silhouettes are dynamic, but let’s not forget the more formal jacquard evening jackets often worn with light, wide palazzo pants.
This season is both dreamy and influenced by utility. Spirited, emotional and free, the collection is an energetic reminder of Armani at his finest — full of vibrancy yet hinged on precision. The palette is one of our favourite of recent years, featuring plenty of black and some dense warm hues, as well as the iridescent pastel hues of peach, lime and lemons, which are treated to refract, mirror and shimmer with each movement.

Menswear Takes A Walk on the Wild Side
The more approachable and relaxed label in the Armani coterie, Emporio Armani has always had the man-on-the-move in mind. This autumn winter, the brand showcased the rugged male, perhaps taking a small page out of Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant.
Although an avowed pal of our four-legged friends, Giorgio Armani nonetheless adorned sizeable portions of his Emporio Armani autumn/winter menswear looks with fur. Fortunately, for said quadropeds, however, the storied Italian brand has taken note of the shift in the industry and all fur was of the fur variety. Whether it was used for coats, jackets or bags – and even shoes – it did look quite surprisingly real, as well as appropriately cosy.
Also much in evidence in a collection that, though wilderness inspired, was in reality aimed at the city, were parkas, puffas and scarves, the latter almost voluminous enough to be worn as tops.
