10 Things You Need to Know About Apple’s New iPhones

Another year, another iPhone. Just in case you missed it, Apple unveiled its highly-anticipated trio of new iPhones on Tuesday. The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature a number of exciting elements such as the powerful new A13 Bionic processor, cutting-edge dual and triple camera systems, the longest battery life ever on an iPhone, and so much more. But sometimes sifting through all the specs can get a little confusing. So here it is, 10 of your most pressing iPhone questions answered below.

1. How much is it?

The iPhone 11 (which is also the newest entry-level iPhone), iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max start at HK$5,999, HK$8,599 and HK$9,499 respectively.

2. When can I buy it?

Pre-orders for the iPhones start tonight (Friday, 13th September) at 8:00pm Hong Kong time. They will be available in stores the following week on Friday, 20th September.

3. What colour does it come in?

The iPhone 11 comes in colour pops of white, black, green, yellow, purple, and (PRODUCT)Red which contributes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max come in a gorgeous metallic Midnight Green, frosty Silver, slick Space Gray and a rosy Gold.

4. How about the design?

Designed in glass and aluminium, the iPhone 11's back is sculpted from a single sheet of glass which is said to be the toughest glass yet. It is also water resistant to a depth of 2 metres for up to 30 minutes. While both Pro models utilise a textured matte glass, again with the toughest yet, and a polished stainless steel design. Both are water resistant to a depth of 4 metres for up to 30 minutes. All new iPhones are splash, water, and dust resistant as well.

5. What does the new A13 Bionic chip do?

Apple have deemed the new chip the "fastest CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) in a smartphone." It has enhanced machine learning and a neural engine which makes it capable of one trillion operations per second. What this effectively means is that it is 20% faster than the previous iPhone X models, i.e. faster graphics and app loading. It will also have a better sense of its location in 3D space and have 30% faster Face ID while supporting different angles for unlocking. The new chip is also more power-efficient -- high efficiency and low power -- which basically saves battery life.

6. Will it take better photos and videos?

The simple answer is yes. But to break it down: the iPhone 11 has a dual lens system consisting of a wide and ultra wide angle lens for a 120-degree field of view, which is fantastic for landscape shots. The extra frame can actually be seen when taking the photo, so you can quickly switch to ultra wide angle when needed.

On the other hand, the Pro models have a triple lens system with the same wide and ultra wide angle, but with the addition of a telephoto lens for a narrow field of view and magnified image. It also has an impressive 4x optical zoom range. Both are ideal for filmmakers and content creators thanks to the camera's 4K recording capabilities, extended dynamic range, and cinematic video stabilisation. You can also record video quicker by holding the capture button and sliding left so you don't miss any fleeting moments.

All the new iPhones have an improved 12-megapixel front-facing "TrueDepth" camera which makes wider group shots or we-fies that much easier. It also has something called "Deep Fusion", which is a new image processing system that optimises the details, pixel-by-pixel, to show noise and texture in the photo. At the same time, Smart HDR (high-dynamic-range) captures all the fine points of shadows and highlights. On top of all of that, an automatic night mode will turn on when it's too dark and brighten up the whole scene.

7. Does audio sound good?

All iPhone 11 models will support spatial audio, which refers to a full sphere surround-sound technique which mimics the way we hear in real life.

8. What happened to 3D Touch?

Apple has ditched 3D Touch for Haptic Touch for all the models in the iPhone 11 series, which means it goes back to the long press rather than using pressure sensitivity. On the website, Apple says "Haptic Touch lets you do things faster, like take selfies without launching the Camera app."

9. Do images and video look good on screen?

The iPhone 11 features an all-screen 6.1 inch liquid retina LCD display, wide colour and True Tone visuals which allows a very natural full-screen experience.

As for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, Apple claims they have the "brightest display" ever seen on the iPhone. They will also have full-screens with incredibly vibrant displays that hold a 5.8 inch and 6.5 inch OLED Super Retina XDR display respectively. Both support the same wide colour and True Tone displays too, while HDR display means photos and videos can be viewed in high-definition too.

10. What's the battery life like?

All the new iPhones have improved battery performance. The iPhone 11 will last one hour longer than its predecessor, the iPhone XR, while the iPhone 11 Pro will have four more hours than the iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max has five more hours than iPhone XS Max. The Pro models will also be bundled with a fast charging 18 watt power adapter, which will get a 50% charge in just half an hour.
