Interview with Roberto Coin: Of success and luck
This story was first published in Prestige Malaysia March 2019 issue
"Do you believe in life coincidences?” Roberto Coin poses the question to me, his eyes twinkling with anticipation, a response to my question earlier on why he settled for Malaysia to launch his next Roberto Coin boutique at Starhill Gallery. I pause for a moment before replying with a resounding yes. “The world is changing and we thought Malaysia will be a good change,” he answerscandidly, further affirming that Roberto Coinrepresents something new today amongst the sea of jewellers in the market. Known as the jeweller to the stars, Roberto Coin’s pieces have been worn by many strong, powerful women, namely Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Barry and Reese Witherspoon. From designing a 24k gold bag to a specially commissioned cobra pen piece by King of Morocco, Roberto Coin hails from a world where he strives to achieve the impossible.

See the Beautiful Accessories from Chanel AW19 Collection Up Close
Chanel bid farewell to its legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld during Paris Fashion Week AW19 earlier this week. Stars, Chanel muses of all generations and editors came together for his final, posthumous show for which Chanel transformed the Grand Palais into a snow-covered mountain town. It's like a metaphor for fashion post-Lagerfeld -- Winter is coming.

Aside of all the desirable jacket suits and dresses in chunky tweeds, checks, houndstooth and many more heritage motifs, Chanel is at its best when it comes to showcasing accessories that are set to be on next season's wish list. They continue to play with their classics and yet, they are renewed with bedazzling freshness. The bags match the tones of a season in the mountains: in black or white smooth quilted leather, supple in quilted tweed with a double C clasp interlaced with leather, a flap in faux fur or a camera case in braided shearling. Removable purses are attached to small bags with shoulder straps. Hip bags in faux fur or leather embroidered with glossy camellias alternate with gondola lift minaudières in rhinestoned resin. The emblematic bags of the House joyfully slalom between the chalet spirit for the Chanel’s Gabrielle bag in leather and fluffy checked tweed, a frosted inspiration for the 11.12 embroidered with sequins, and its all schuss energy for the 2.55 in neon orange quilted leather.

Jewellery comes in frosty clear, pearls, gold, silver and enamel, playing with frost motifs and house emblems from from double C logo and hearts. Hats come in tweed or faux fur, while sunglasses with mirrored lens borrow its inspiration from none other than ski goggles.

The ‘80s Revived in BVLGARI’s Latest Collection
History always has a way of repeating itself, and in the case of throwbacks, it’s the return of the most loved (and sometimes most hated) era of the eighties. As one of the most recognisable periods of our time, when culture was so heavily influenced by new wave music, brazen fashion and the rise of technology, its iconic expression is once again embraced with arms wide open — especially in the case of luxury Italian jewellery brand, BVLGARI and in their new collection, Wild Pop.
Big hair, MTV, shoulder-padded power suits, the Rubik’s cube, Pac-Man, are just a few of the many hallmarks that come to mind when remembering the ‘80s. Not to mention the personalities that transformed pop culture as we know it, from Madonna and Michael Jackson to Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Capturing these quintessential elements, BVLGARI’s Wild Pop takes us back to the future with its approach to reinventing jewellery from the past for today.
OUR TOP PICKS: BVLGARI’S WILD POP
MTV
Paying tribute to the transitional period for music — arguably the golden era for rock and pop — is the Pop Mics set which includes a necklace, bracelet and brooch. Carefully crafted into playful mic motifs strung together in alternating order, each mic is composed of onyx and white diamond micro-pavé base with a polished cabochon of amethyst, peridots, rubellites and aquamarines for its grill.

Synth-Pop
Riding on music, new age electronic was introduced and popularised by music videos, inspiring the Synthesizer necklace. The black keys are made of perfectly polished black onyx, while the white keys are made of pavé radiant-cut white diamonds of varying carat weight. The beauty of this design lies in textured depth and stone arrangement making it a wearable statement piece for both casual and formal occasions.

Over the Top Hair
Perhaps the most unexpected muse in the collection, the hot rollers of the ‘80s plays a playful tribute to the exaggerated hair trend of the time. Pushing its boundaries of high jewellery with inspiration drawn from the everyday personal item, this playful piece utilises a set of diamond hair curlers topped with cabochon-cut emeralds for a pop of colour.

Disproportional Sleeves
Inspired by the overblown and exaggerated ruffles which were a fundamental characteristic definition of the fashion landscape of the ‘80s, the Magnificent Green Ruffles necklace epitomises its name in all its glory. This whimsical piece is composed of over 34 carats of Colombian emeralds droplets and diamond, turquoise and amethyst micro setting.

Recreational Cannabis
It comes as no surprise that Happy Leaves earns a title in favourite pieces of the collection with the hyper-popularity and recent legalisation of it in certain countries. Inspired by the rise of recreational use of the herb since the '80s, the elegantly risqué depiction of the plant is materialised in a chain of gold and diamond pendants with cutout silhouette of the cannabis leaf.

An Italian Passion for Beauty at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show
This Story is sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission.
Italy will once again have a strong presence at the 36th Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, which takes place from February 28 to March 4 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai. The country’s significant contribution to the show – more than 170 Italian companies will be present – is hardly surprising; Italian craftsmen and gem-setters are renowned throughout the world for their skill in the creation of exquisite jewellery. And in Italy, many jewellers undertake all stages of production in-house. As in previous years, the show’s Italian Pavilion will be overseen by the Italian Trade Commission (in Italian, ICE).
In Hong Kong, the Italian Trade Commission, is headed in the city by Michele Scuotto. “Italian jewellery is considered to be among the finest on Earth, at the forefront of craftsmanship, ingenuity and innovation,” he says. “The Italian Pavilion features exceptional and varied jewellery collections, from silver and gold to coral, pearls, gemstones and diamonds. No matter which area you visit, you are guaranteed to be enchanted by the classical qualities, the glamour and the elegance created by Italian jewellers.”
ICE is the Italian government agency responsible for the development and promotion of trade between Italy and other nations across the globe, and as such is the most authoritative body on what the “Made in Italy” brand actually means in terms of excellence and quality.
In 2018, Italy’s value of gem and jewellery exports to Hong Kong stood at more than USD 1 billion – a market share of 7 percent.
