Asia’s Hottest New Supermodel, Tang He, Struts Her Stuff at Chungking Mansions

"I never thought I’d be a model because when I was young, I never thought I’d grow to be this tall, but I did think I wanted to be an actress or a singer,” says Tang He, who was discovered at a performing-arts school in her hometown in Jilin province, China.

Since being signed to Elite in Shanghai almost three years ago, the 18-year-old is fast becoming one of fashion’s most talked-about faces. This season she opened Miu Miu’s resort show and joined what she calls “my Miu Miu family”, featuring in the brand’s autumn/winter advertising campaign. “It’s my first international campaign,” He says, “and I’m very excited and very happy. It makes me feel like the last couple of years have been worth it.”

Indeed, it’s been a very fast rise to the top for the Chinese teen. Her first show outside her home country was for Tom Ford. “It’s a show that so many models wanted to be in and I got it on my first try, so I’m very grateful,” she says. “I love modelling. It gives me the chance to wear so many beautiful clothes and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Besides Miu Miu and Tom Ford, He can now be seen in most high-profile shows, appearing at Valentino and Fendi haute couture just this season. And it’s clear after working with her on just one shoot that, despite her natural talent, He is wholly dedicated to her craft. “I don’t mind posing more,” she tells us. “Make sure you tell me what you want me to do if I’m not delivering, so we can get the shot. I really don’t mind.”

Of course, making it as a model on the international stage is not without its share of criticism and hardship. When she signed to Next, her global agency, brands told He she had to slim down in order to walk in the European collections and haute couture shows. She did it, she got the jobs and somehow kept her youthful spirit.

“I think I’m a bit too slim now,” she says, when asked about her weight. “I don’t think you need to be super-skinny to be a model, to be honest. As long as you can fit into the clothes and your body is healthy, that’s all you really need. I want to put a bit of weight back on so we have to eat some good food for lunch later.”

And with that, we bring He to a bakery between shots, pointing out our favourite local sweet buns, and she squeals with the glee of a happy teenager.

“I’d like to try that one,” she says, pointing to a sugary bun stuffed with shredded coconut. As she eats in the taxi on our way to the next location, still decked out in Loewe, Dior and Jimmy Choos, she smiles and says, “There’s probably nothing better in the world than a sugary bun, don’t you think?”

Rhapsody in Blue

Nobody can deliver classic Italian style quite like Mr Armani. This autumn winter 2019, Giorgio Armani delivered a languid and sultry collection called “Rhapsody in Blue” at Armani Silos, the brand’s vast exhibition complex opened in 2015 in Milan.

Satin and velvets in black and blue were twisted and cut into slim and sharp silhouettes as well as shapes that billowed and fanned out. Crushed velvet was juxtaposed against glinting satin and ornamentation alternated between fabric swirls and mirrored enamel set against purple beads. Pants were either jodhpurs or cut slim and the swirl motif also made an appearance on the leather of square-toed boots. While Armani’s signature suiting remained key – as double breasted pieces or loose trousered, single breasted creations with ornamentation dotting the jackets, the one-shouldered tops evinced most excitement.

Haute Couture Week: 6 Runway Beauty Trends We Love

Haute Couture Beauty

Haute Couture Week upped the catwalk beauty stakes on Tuesday, with spine-tingling looks proffered by Givenchy, Giorgio Armani, Chanel and more. We round up some of the highlights and our favourite looks from the runway.

[gallery ids="152303,152305,152301,152302,152304,152306"]

Chanel championed sublime elegance with a beauty look that comprised flawless complexions, a lick of winged eyeliner and a simple ponytail, secured at the nape of the neck.

Hair-raising coiffures stole the show at Givenchy, with models sporting avant-garde styles that saw their tresses whipped up into playful, abstract structural shapes.

Exaggerated false eyelashes lent an element of drama to the beauty look at Giorgio Armani, which was exacerbated by bold brows and gelled, wet-look chignons. A natural lip placed the focus on the eye makeup.

Alexandre Vauthier kept things straightforward with a chic, natural makeup look and loose hairstyles. A matte complexion played into the ‘English rose' aesthetic.

Crimped hair, grungy eye makeup, lacquered red lipstick... the beauty look at Julien Fournié championed fearless, full-on glamour.

Dark eyeshadow, glossy lips and glowing complexions made for a beguiling beauty look at the Stephane Rolland show.

Eternal Elegance

Take any chapter in the rich history of Giorgio Armani and behold the timeless, seemingly effortless elegance that transcends the epoch his outfits were born into. In the ’70s he brought power dressing to leading ladies on screen (reflect on how he dressed Diane Keaton); in the ’80s he relaxed that silhouette with softer fabrics (sure, he worked the shoulder pads, but he made the jackets in velvet for Jodie Foster); in the ’90s, he singlehandedly transformed Oscar red-carpet dressing by eschewing Vegas-style-sequins, feathers and costume jewellery for aesthetically impeccable ensembles and diamonds. As he famously said of dressing leading ladies for the red carpet, “She will not regret what she is wearing when she looks at pictures of herself in the press the next day. Or even next year.”

Or even next decade, as hindsight now reveals. Armani refrained from being trendy, opting for classic. Fads meant nothing to him as he focused on the eternal, putting the pow into power dressing with his signature style. This season however, he’s gone for a gentler, ethereal silhouette.

Enhanced by the use of “liquid” fabrics and aquatic colours, the latest collection is based on an abstract inspiration: a game of refractions created by a ray of light on a body of water. To that end, Armani uses fine lines and materials for clothing that envelops the body and flows with the silhouette, resulting in an impression of soft and gentle elegance.

The liquid effect is reproduced in organza and translucent materials, blended together and overlapping, with ruffles and layers in subtle, delicate hues: metallic greys, silky pastels, pale blues, with touches of pinks and bright greens. The overall effect is one of iridescent and poetic elegance: fragility full of strength.

“Collection after collection, I hone the idea of soft elegance,” Armani says from his studio. “This season the challenge has been to transpose the mutability of the shape and colour of water into garments and accessories. I achieved this effect with subtle but firm fabrics, using linear constructions and a masterly play on lightweight overlays and glossy embroidery.”

On this journey, the Giorgio Armani woman finds strength in gossamer grace and apparent fragility. Armani was about power dressing. Now, he dresses the empowered.
