The Merveilles Collection is Timeless Jewellery in the Form of Colourful Works of Art

The House of Boghossian has been enjoying the spotlight in the world of jewellery, especially in recent years. Responsible for its growing success is its technical craftsmanship and design, piecing together precious gemstones of the finest quality in near-invisible settings. The unique concept, Merveilles, first debuted in 2017 and made its innovative method of setting gemstones on all surfacing, producing tapered and curved architecture of interlocking gems.

The Merveilles Icicle has become the brand’s most iconic piece – instantly recognisable for its contemporary design. Known for the “art of inlay”, it comes as no surprise that the luxury jewellery maison’s breakthrough designs rest on its ability to minimise the visible hardware, to spotlight the stones themselves and obtaining the best possible light refractions. The gems are cleverly assembled into one seamless setting, appearing to float in the air.

The Limited Edition Icicle takes on the modern elongated shape of the Merveilles, with an added suite of coloured precious and semi-precious stones weaved in a spiral and gradient style, giving off the illusion of the delicate features of the natural wonders of winter. Each stone is carefully selected for the most exacting colour and carat match, ensuring immaculate harmony in its form. While the Spiral design brings to life the icicle concept, the Gradient design is elegantly set in a continuous manner in hues from dark to light.

Apart from the Limited Edition Icicle series within the Merveilles Collection, the famed technique is also utilised in its Merveilles Bridal collection – a new paragon in bridal jewellery, with solid pavé diamond eternity band with stones inside and out. Available in the form of a band, solitaire and crown ring featuring a centre stone surrounded in a single or double halo micro-setting.

The Merveilles Halo being the third and final pillar of the collection are classic elongated hoop earrings in four sizes. Designed to echo the delicate curve of the face, with an ellipse and gentle cusp to carpet the entire piece with shimmering diamonds.

Celebrating timeless classics with Cartier this Christmas

Gifting jewellery during Christmas might be a common move, but it’s still a bold one. Choosing the right type and style is certainly no easy task, given its prestige. It’s also a highly subjective task – what you might think the receiver will like could certainly be the other way round. That’s why, even the boldest men can break out in cold sweat while attempting to pick the perfect piece of jewellery.

While it can be challenging to pick the right piece, might we say that any of these pieces from Cartier will put you on the right track? Fashion may come and go, but your loved ones will definitely hang on to these jewellery pieces from Cartier until the end of time. Here are our suggestions:

[gallery ids="179772,179773,179774,179775,179776"]

Clash de Cartier is a two-sided jewellery collection. At the heart of its line, duality is what set the collection apart from the rest. It’s a match of opposites with the use of the brand’s iconic studs, beads and clous carré in a singular ribbed mesh. The pieces are stunning and unique in its own way where the brand combines different elements and place them together. It’s sharp but soft to the touch; geometrical yet holds feminine features; mechanical but has fludity. It’s what Cartier labels as “an expression of duality, dynamic tension and a clash of attitude”.

[gallery ids="179769,179771,179770"]

Panthère de Cartier is another icon from the brand. It’s an ever-evolving idea but still embodies its true essence: a celebratory hedonistic and ultra-feminine spirit. Two new faces; the manchette watch has been redesigned to hold more fluidity, with a dial that is off-centred and a partly open-worked chain that reveals the skin. In the mini watch, proportion is key. It’s a replica of the original model but brought to new heights of elegance.

The Many Facets of the Classic Engagement Ring

Shopping for an engagement ring is one of the most daunting and serious purchases one can make – it is after all to commemorate a lifetime commitment. Considering the magnitude of this gesture, the importance of the engagement ring warrants thorough consideration. To make life (and life decisions) a little simpler, we break down the reasons why a classic diamond ring is what brides-to-be dream of.

For as long as rings have existed, the Solitaire setting has been around. Still the most popular style of engagement rings today, the solitaire design emphasises on the beauty of the stone – the same deeply rooted values ingrained at the luxury jeweller, Graff, who has dedicated over half a century in revealing the fullest potential of every stone.

As the most fabulous jeweller in the world, Graff has always been driven by a passion for diamonds. Renowned for the prowess in bringing out the natural beauty of gemstones through cutting and polishing, Graff comes to mind when in search for the perfect diamond. This is why their Laurence Graff Signature Collection continues to be one of the most sought-after designs desired by modern women.

Each and every piece from the Laurence Graff Signature Collection is handcrafted by master artisans to highlight the finest diamonds. The design features intricately crafted facets (in either polished gold or pavé diamond studded in varying widths) to echo the brand’s everlasting dedication to the love of precious gemstones. The minimalism and uniqueness of the band allows for flexibility when selecting the stone – from more traditional cuts such as the round, cushion and emerald, to more contemporary shapes such as the marquise, pear-shape and heart-shape; to the colour, clarity and carat that caters to the budget and preference of each individual.

Clash de Cartier Studio pop-up to arrive in Singapore

The Clash de Cartier collection has been called many things: Subversive; disruptive; a game changer in the maison's aesthetic heritage. And for the first time, Cartier is bringing its immersive pop-up dedicated to this range for the first time to Singapore, following the success of the original Parisian version.

[caption id="attachment_173505" align="alignnone" width="1"]clash de cartier studio (Photo: Cartier)[/caption]

Held at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery from 15 to 17 November, the pop-up takes on the collection's theme of duality via contradictions and juxtapositions. The experience begins with a questionnaire that will lead you to the starting point of one of two main rooms: The Bookstore or the Record Store. The former has literature of various genres and themes decked on the shelves and the tables. There is also a personality test that rewards you with a personalised typewritten Haikus by poets stationed in the room.

[caption id="attachment_173506" align="alignnone" width="1024"]clash de cartier studio (Photo credit: Cartier)[/caption]

In the Record Store, soundscapes take centerstage with highly focused sound showers blasting the Clash de Cartier playlist put together by French sound designer Michel Gauber. Tracks are a mish-mash of genres from classical to rock. Want to take the playlist home with you? Scan your Spotify code for access.

[caption id="attachment_173508" align="alignnone" width="1024"]The cafe of clash de cartier studio (Photo credit: Cartier)[/caption]

Another memento you can leave with is a printed portrait with key product codes of the Clash de Cartier collection.

After all that excitement, troop over to the cafe for a complimentary Clash party and drink to the live sounds of a DJ from 6pm to 9pm. The interior at this cafe is a testament to the word "Clash" in Clash de Cartier as it cleverly melds Singapore-inspired decor and contemporary European design with metallic accents.

Harry Winston’s love letter to New York continues with the Fifth Avenue collection

No other jewellery house boasts ties to New York quite like Harry Winston. The King of Diamonds was born in the Big Apple in 1896, to a father that owned a small jewellery store 50 blocks from the future headquarters of his namesake jewellery label. Although life would take him to Los Angeles as a teenager, he found his way back to the city, opening the Premier Diamond Company, which he would later rename it after himself. And so the fabled legacy of Harry Winston was cemented in New York.

[caption id="attachment_170853" align="alignnone" width="822"] Harry Winston sitting in town house opposite St. Patrick's Cathedral, where he was a guest as a young man. (Photo credit: Eliot Elisofon/Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images)[/caption]

Last year, the jewellery house launched a collection named after the city and it was met with rousing success. Now, as an extension of the range, Harry Winston celebrates the neighbourhoods and places that influenced his storied legacy. The Fifth Avenue collection draws upon the landmarks of the upscale and storied thoroughfare.

[caption id="attachment_170855" align="alignnone" width="633"] The Fifth Avenue Sapphire and Diamond Draperie Necklace: 20 Sapphire Beads amounting to 373.42-ct and 134 diamonds amounting to 20.15-ct set in platinum[/caption]

Five key suites make up the Fifth Avenue collection. The Sapphire and Diamond Draperie takes inspiration from the Rockefeller Center, which was designed in the 1930s Art Deco style, with its geometry and bold sapphire beads.  The Y-shaped design is a nod to the panoramic view of Rockefeller Center and its large pavilion, The Plaza.

[caption id="attachment_170856" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Fifth Avenue Ruby and Diamond Cluster Twist Bracelet:
70 Rubies totalling 24.91-ct set and 112 Diamonds totalling 27.55-ct in platinum[/caption]

Sapphires feature once more in the elegant Sapphires and Diamonds suite that honours the magnificent Greenwich Village archway – Washington Square Arch. Another suite that pays homage to architectural institutions in the thoroughfare is the Crossover Diamond Suite. The necklace and ring are bedecked in marquise, round brilliant, and baguette diamonds artfully arranged in a perfect symmetry, as a stunning take on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Fifth Avenue entryway.

The Pearl and Diamond Draperie suite brings to mind the energetic intersections along Fifth Avenue and the Art Deco architectural accents in the FlatIron district, while the Ruby and Diamond necklace and earrings are geometric tributes to the tapered triangular tops of the mansions along "Millionaire's Row".

The beginner’s guide on how to start your very own vintage jewellery collection

While there is an undeniable charm about vintage jewellery, shopping for it can be intimidating for first-time buyers. We ask the experts for their top tips on starting a collection.

Do your research

“As with buying any piece of valuable jewellery, it would be best if you have some basic knowledge of what you are buying: Understand the gemstones as well as the various quality factors. Learn how to check for hallmarks indicating the purity of gold and possible provenance, as these would significantly affect the value of the piece.” - Goh Ying Li, Creative Director at La Putri

“Read related books, articles and magazines on vintage jewellery. Then, check out vintage jewellery exhibitions or shops, so you can see the actual pieces and feel the different characteristics of jewellery from various periods. This will help you identify your own style and period preference. For example, some may like the delicacy of Edwardian design, while others prefer the retro style of the ’40s.” - Terry Chu, Phillips’ Head of Jewellery for Asia

Speak to the experts

“The best way to start a collection is to get involved: Go to viewings and auctions, see what sells and what doesn’t, learn from the specialists. This will help you understand value and you can witness market trends first-hand. One of the most important takeaways for a potential collector is to ask questions and handle as much jewellery as you can, to build confidence in what you are possibly acquiring.” - Daphne Lingon, Christie’s Head of Jewellery for the Americas

“It can be very hard to distinguish between a genuine vintage piece and a good copy, so I’d encourage collectors to learn as much as possible before buying. The more you see, the more you learn. Speak to experts and ask how they authenticate the piece. There are many jewellery auctions and vintage jewellery fairs around the world every year. Visit them and practise using a jeweller’s 10X loupe to look at the different marks and signs – play detective!” - Yvonne Chu, Acting Head of Department, Jewellery, at Sotheby’s Asia

[caption id="attachment_170658" align="alignnone" width="1157"]How to start a vintage jewellery collection A private collection of Mystery-Set jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels headlined Bonhams’ London Jewels sale in September. (Photo: Bonhams)[/caption]

Start buying at auctions

Attending jewellery auction viewings will not only help you become familiar with what is on the market, but also provides the perfect introduction to the wide range of styles on offer – from rare 18th-century pieces right through to modern and contemporary designs. The diversity at auctions is hard to beat.” - Jean Ghika, Global Director of Jewellery at Bonhams

When in doubt, go Art Deco

“The market for Art Deco jewellery has always been strong, with signed pieces by Cartier from this period performing exceptionally well at auctions.” Daphne Lingon, Christie’s Head of Jewellery for the Americas

“Art Deco pieces with typical geometric outlines or bold colour contrasts are always popular because they have an iconic style.” - Terry Chu, Phillips’ Head of Jewellery for Asia

“Most of my clients start with Art Deco jewellery – diamond double clips or diamond bracelets are very popular for first-time visitors to our store. It’s a great look, very versatile, usually priced more attractively than modern diamond brooches and very well made. Compared to jewellery from some other periods, it’s easier to gauge the basic intrinsic value of Art Deco diamond and platinum pieces because you can easily calculate the carats of diamonds and assess the 4Cs and workmanship – and they go well with most outfits today too.” - Brenda Kang, Founder of Revival Vintage Jewels Objects

[caption id="attachment_170655" align="alignnone" width="1199"]How to start a vintage jewellery collection Jewellery’s provenance adds to its value. This brooch by Hennel circa 1925 has an engraved emerald dated 1813 to 1814, thought to have been presented by the Mughal emperor Akbar II to Lady Mary Hood. It was auctioned at Bonhams’ London Jewels sale with a pre-sale estimate of £40,000 to £60,000 (Photo: Bonhams)[/caption]

Look for a signature

“Signed pieces – where the name of the jewellery house or maker is engraved on the underside of the piece or on the inside of the ring – are generally more valuable than unsigned ones. Cartier, Fabergé, Harry Winston, JAR, Lalique, Van Cleef & Arpels, to name a few – any of these names on a jewel will transform its value. Jewellery designed and produced by these makers represents a very high standard, although much depends on the piece too. A signature on a 1920s Cartier Tutti Frutti piece – among the most sought-after of the house’s creations – for instance, can potentially transform the value to millions of dollars. Signed pieces by mid-century designers such as Suzanne Belperron and Jean Schlumberger have also received great attention in our recent sales. Jewels, both signed and unsigned, from the 1960s and ’70s have been in demand too.” - Daphne Lingon, Christie’s Head of Jewellery for the Americas

Consider jumping on the ’60s to ’80s bandwagon

“Jewellery from this period seems to be gaining popularity, especially chunky yellow gold jewellery and watches with stone dials. These used to be slow moving, but have been popular in the past year or so. I’ve always loved retro jewels – yellow gold pieces are so perfect for daytime. They make a real statement while still being office appropriate.” - Brenda Kang, Founder of Revival Vintage Jewels & Objects

Be cautious when buying online

“Do your research, and visit online sites that are trusted and curated by vintage experts. Look for easy entry points on each site. For instance, at Vestiaire Collective, we have a We Love selection curated by our experts that showcases the most desirable items available. Read all descriptions very carefully: When you’re shopping online, you don’t have the luxury of physically touching and feeling each piece, so it’s crucial that all details are listed up front. Don’t be afraid to ask for more information from the seller if you need it. Some things you need to look out for: Are the pieces tarnished? Are all the gems secure? Are all the clasps functioning?” - Fanny Moizant, President and Co-founder of Vestiaire Collective

Go with your heart

“First and foremost, collect what you love. Having a theme or collecting a series from a period is great, but I’m also a big advocate of buying pieces that you will wear, create your own memories with and can pass down to the next generation, rather than just something that would sit in a safe or a drawer.” - Brenda Kang, Founder of Revival Vintage Jewels & Objects

“I don’t see a need for a goal or special theme when building your personal collection. It’s good enough to follow your heart, because one may need a pair of delicate Edwardian pearl earrings for a party and then a strong geometric Art Deco brooch for work.” - Terry Chu, Phillips’ Head of Jewellery for Asia

[inline-quote author="Jean Ghika, Global Director of Jewellery at Bonhams "]"Always ask if there have been any alterations or additions, and if there are, whether they have been done sympathetically (only restoring and repairing the piece, without changing too much of the original)."[/inline-quote]

Note the condition of the piece

“Always ask if there have been any alterations or additions, and if there are, whether they have been done sympathetically (only restoring and repairing the piece, without changing too much of the original).” - Jean Ghika, Global Director of Jewellery at Bonhams

“When you are looking for a beautiful piece of jewellery, do pay attention to the workmanship and finish quality. Look at the underside of the piece as well as the front to examine how well it is made; if a piece of jewellery is finely crafted, as much attention would have been paid to the back as to the front. Also, examine how smooth the finish is and if the settings are secure, straight and regular. This applies to all jewellery, whether vintage or new.” - Goh Ying Li, Creative Director at La Putri

Tap the power of provenance

“The value of jewellery is determined by a combination of factors, including design and brand, period, craftsmanship, the quality of the gemstones and authenticity. On top of these, provenance can have a significant impact on the value of a piece of jewellery. Well-documented records indicating where the jewellery comes from and who wore the piece are not only proof of its authenticity, but can also make it more desirable. Jewellery with good provenance often comes with a story that makes it more interesting and attractive too – the Hutton- Mdivani jadeite necklace previously owned by Barbara Hutton and subsequently acquired by the Cartier Collection is a great example. The necklace was sold for US$27.44 million in April 2014, achieving a world auction record for any jadeite jewellery.” - Yvonne Chu, Acting Head of Department, Jewellery, at Sotheby’s Asia
