Sugar Or Spice: Our Favourite Moments From Prestige KL Ball 2018

prestige kl ball 2018

It was a night of elegance and glamour as the who’s who of high society gathered at the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Prestige KL Ball, a highly-anticipated soiree held for distinguished members of society’s elite who will turn up in full force to dazzle the crowds with their most elaborate black tie outfits. This year's festivities began with a close-up of the new  Mercedes-Maybach S560 parked at the hotel's grand entrance followed by pre-dinner cocktails provided by Perrier-Jouët as guests took the opportunity to tap into their inner sweet tooth by grabbing a bite at the makeshift candy store and striking a fabulous pose in front of the massive photo wall.

While the attendees waited with bated breath to discover the delights housed within the resplendent Majestic Ballroom, they explored the various whimsical booths put together by this year’s generous event sponsors which included showing their creative side in front of the high-tech 3D display by HP; donning the latest bedazzling bling from the Hearts On Fire collection by Habib Jewels; and viewing the latest luxurious cosmetics as well as fragrances from YSL Beauté.

As the revelry wore on, it was time for the guests to make their way inside the ball room where they were greeted by a glorious vision of sugar and spice and all things nice. There were sheer fabrics streaming from the ceiling in a kaleidoscope of rainbow colours and tables decorated with candles as well as gorgeous flower bouquets that matched perfectly with the whimsical interiors.

Once the guests had settled in their respective seats, Steven Chan, Managing Director and Publisher of Hubert Burda Media Malaysia took to the stage to extend a warm welcome to the lively guests and thank them for their support. The guests then proceeded to mingle while indulging in the epicurean delights paired with copious servings of effervescent champagne.

After a medley of dance, live instrumental and song performances, it was time to reveal the honourees of this year’s Prestige Achievement Award which recognises the most noteworthy changemakers making waves in Malaysia. Presented by Rubin Khoo, Associate Publisher of Hubert Burda Media Malaysia, this year’s prestigious award went to YAM Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Gifted with a gorgeous bangle from Bvlgari, the award was presented by the honourable guest of the evening, DYTM Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.

Shortly after the Prestige Best Dressed Awards winners were announced, it was time to top things off with a “Sweet Surprise” as guests made their way to the foyer to indulge in Royal Salute 21 Year Old blended scotch whisky and various sugary sweet treats while shimmying the night away on the dance floor.

Getting to Know Nicole Fung of That Food Cray

In Prestige Online’s new “Getting to Know” series, we ask Hong Kong’s favourite personalities what they’re like outside of work — and get a little more personal.

If you follow any food blogs at all, you’ll likely have heard of Nicole Fung, who goes by the name of That Food Cray !!! along with her husband Eugene Kan. The platform is an immensely popular website for food and travel, but Nicole has more up her sleeve, as one of the co-founders of digital platform MISSBISH, which focuses on female empowerment through women’s fashion, fitness and lifestyle.

We caught a moment in between the Hong Kong-based entrepreneur’s busy schedule to find out what she’s getting up to these days.

What have you been doing on the weekends?

Last weekend, I went on a hike. Then got a manicure and a gel lash lift. My husband just got back from LA, so we just had a nice Netflix and chill Saturday night. On Sunday, I went to check out some puppies looking for fosters at PMQ and then Clockenflap. But this weekend I'll be in India. I'll be in Jaipur heading to the Taj Mahal and then Delhi. It's my first time! So I’m excited.

What was the last meal you had?

The last meal I had was soba noodles that I made at home. The last restaurant meal I had was at Amber, a four hands collaborative dinner hosted by Chef Luca Fantin from Il Ristorante in Tokyo and Chef Richard Ekkebus from Amber at the Landmark Oriental.

What’s on your playlist right now?

The last songs I listened to via Spotify were "Morning Sex" by Joey Purp, "Why iii Love The Moon" by Phony Ppl, "Blind Man" by Xavir Omär, and "Beauty & Essex" by Free Nationals featuring Daniel Caesar.

What are you most likely to order at a bar?

I prefer having savoury notes in my drinks. So a Caesar or Bloody Mary. The best Bloody Mary I've ever had in Hong Kong is at Bar Butler. They use fresh Japanese fruit tomatoes and clamato!

[caption id="attachment_105429" align="alignnone" width="1196"] Bloody Marys are a combination of vodka, tomato juice, and different spices such as Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery, olives, salt and pepper, lemon juice and more.[/caption]

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love McDonalds LOL. I usually order the Sausage n' Egg McMuffin at Mcdonald's after a night out or I'll order the Sausage n' Egg Twisty Pasta when I'm recovering from a hangover.

Tell us something that not too many people know about you.

I actually try to eat pretty balanced meals when I'm not traveling and work out regularly.

Show us your most recent photo.

Here’s one of me taken by my husband Eugene on film.

Who was the last person you called?

I've been on hold with EasyJet for the last hour trying to get a flight reimbursement *eye roll*.

尋找。容祖兒 Searching For Answers

Dr Rajiv Bhanot And Omega: Two Peas In A Pod

Upon entering Dr Rajiv Bhanot’s living quarters, one will immediately notice a golf club encased for display. “If you look closely, you’ll notice how Tunku Abdul Rahman’s name is etched on the golf club. This golf club means a lot to me in what it represents, as Tunku sought independence for our country using diplomacy and not violence: the pen is mightier than the sword.”

Considering how there’re only 24 hours in a day, Rajiv being able to juggle all his commitments that he has so far is an achievement in itself: co-owner of PHI Clinic, Rajiv is also the founder of H2GO Global. Besides that, he is also managing director of Venuescape, an event management organisation. On top of that, he holds responsibilities in various non-profit organisations. To call his résumé extensive isn’t even the half of it. “I think it’s important to enjoy what you do. I wake up excited on most days looking forward to what I’ll be doing throughout the day. I work 7 days a week but it doesn’t feel like working for me. An example is the work trips I get to go on, which also fulfil my love for travel.”

H2GO Global is dedicated in providing rural communities access to clean drinking water, something Rajiv believes is a basic human right. “We acquired the patent and IP to a British nanotechnology that has the unique ability to convert any source of dirty water into clean sterile drinking water. When you look at the statistics globally, one-sixth of a billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water. You’ve got close to three million deaths caused every year solely due to contaminated drinking water, which to me is a humanitarian catastrophe. That being said, to have the means to assist in parts of the world where clean drinking water is simply not available, that would be the mission of the company.”

To have dedicated so many of his early years studying medicine, stepping out to venture into entrepreneurship took as much motivation as it took courage. According to him, the routine life in the hospital was taking a toll on him, with him feeling that the continuation of doing so would hinder his own set of dreams and aspirations. “People always feel the need to validate themselves to others, but really to me, I just want to be able to do what I’m confident in doing.”

That being said, Rajiv still maintains his involvement with the medical world with PHI Clinic, a chain of medical and dental aesthetic clinics. “What we’re currently doing at PHI Clinic is very exciting as we’re constantly looking at the latest technology in medical and dental aesthetics. To be able to witness the advancement of technology evolve the field of medicine is truly magnificent.”

Of course, with everything that’s going on in Rajiv’s life, one thing remains the top priority: his wife Deborah Henry. Beaming with pride, he talks about how Deborah is achieving amazing things of her own. That of course hinders the quality time they get to spend with each other, but they definitely make time when they can. “We’ve recently taken up cycling as a way for us to spend more time together. Besides that, we also extend our work trips whenever we can to make a little holiday out of it.”

A man is represented through his timepiece. This is a statement Rajiv agrees entirely, with him being an enthusiast when it comes to horology. “I have various pieces which I wear based on the occasion I’m wearing to and the mood I’m in during that particular time. But as a whole, I love a subtle piece that’s also practical. I don’t believe in being too flashy. Subtlety in itself already speaks volumes for me.”

The Omega Seamaster Diver 300m, a line celebrating its 25-year anniversary, is a timepiece Rajiv resonates with, as it maintains the balance between constant innovation and still holding on to traditional values. According to him, the ability to reinvent oneself is vital in achieving longevity in staying relevant to society. “What might work today may not work in the next 5 to 10 years, so I believe that one must always be open to accepting constructive criticism. If you take a look at all the businesses that have been disrupted today, most of them were because they failed to reinvent themselves to adapt to the times.” This rings true, as not only Rajiv personifies this belief, but also the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m, a timepiece that accommodates perfectly to the requirements of today’s wearers while still remaining true to its roots.
