Aveda: Surrounded by the Love of Nature (A Christmas Giveaway)

With less than a couple of weeks to go until the most wonderful time of the year, it’s time for the annual Prestige Christmas Giveaway. From December 13th to 24th, we’re offering Prestige Online readers the chance to win amazing prizes each and every day on Instagram, as we count down the 12 days of Christmas.

Whether you’re stuck on your gift list, sick of shopping, or just in need of a treat, here’s just a little something from us to you, to thank you for being our loyal readers.

Christmas Giveaway Day 6: Aveda x 3.1 Phillip Lim 2021 Holiday Collection

"Nature is the best beauty artist of all," said Aveda, one of the first beauty and haircare companies that endorses greater environmental responsibility. For decades, they have been innovating high-quality products like shampoo, bath, and body care, with a vegan and eco-friendly formula that has never changed.

This year, Aveda has partnered with 3.1 Phillip Lim, a global fashion brand, to bring the botanical world of beauty to life together. Their 2021 Holiday Collection items include stylish hair accessories and gift packaging that is created with sustainability at heart.

Paint with Affections

The Aveda x 3.1 Phillip Lim Holiday Collection showcases handpainted accessories in a blatantly beautiful style. With brushes featuring the curve and shape of leaves, the power and awe of nature are in full bloom. Vivid greens and flamboyant corals are woven peacefully together to form gorgeous wildflowers and plants.

Only someone with profound feelings for nature could have painted this way. The designs are by Sophie Parker, a botanical artist who uses fresh-cut botanicals as a natural canvas to create the magnificent prints in the holiday collection. In her past works, she has a fondness for letting the plant itself guide her brushstrokes and colour choices.

Aveda: Create with Respect

The covetable, limited-edition hair accessories are created with respect for the Earth. They include a hair towel wrap and a carrying bag that are made of 100 percent organic cotton. The plush wrap secures snugly on the head with a convenient button and loop closure to gently remove moisture from the hair after washing and help decrease dry time.

The scrunchie trio, made of recycled PET (from things like plastic water bottles), is easy on hair and make for a fashionable wrist accessory when not in use. Another surprising design is the wide-tooth detangling comb, made from an extremely high percentage of post-consumer recycled polypropylene and fibre carton, embracing the holistic approach to haircare that Aveda's founder championed.

Plant more Beauty

There's more to come next year for Aveda's beautiful and luxurious products, with the aim of giving back to the earth in a beautiful cycle of regenerative gifts. In January, Aveda will be introducing a Nutriplenish Treatment Masques which gives four times more hydration to hair instantly. Another special styling solution is the Nutriplenish Curl Gelée is designed to create shiny and defined waves. Stay tuned for the new launch in 2022!

New In: 10 Beauty Products to Try Out this September

Fifty metres underground — this is the depth that local winemakers chose when they decided to store 10,000 wine bottles in the Aven d'Orgnac caves, an underground tourist attraction located at the southern end of the limestone plateau of the Gorges de l'Ardèche.

The experiment began in March 2018, when a new storage facility was specially created in a disused access tunnel to allow wine to mature in what amounts to a highly stable and peaceful environment.

A living product that ages best in undisturbed darkness, the wine will have benefited from ideal conditions: A constant temperature of around 12°C and an all-year-long rate of humidity of over 95%.

On December 12, 1,000 bottles of Côtes du Vivarais "Grand Aven 2017" from this treasure trove will be passed from hand to hand by a chain of human volunteers who will bring them back to the surface after two years underground. Thereafter, they will go under the hammer with a range of other local vintages in an auction with modest reserve prices.

Lots on offer will include 150 magnums of Terra Helvorum 2017 starting at 30 euros, 350 bottles of 2015 Terra Helvorum for as little as 15 euros and 350 bottles of Grand Aven 2016 from just 10 euros.

On land and sea

These days, experiments to store wine deep underground are very much in vogue in France. On June 3 of this year, 500 bottles were placed in racks at a depth of 103 metres in caves in Padirac under the watchful eye of Serge Dubs, the Best Sommelier of the World in 1989.

The first of these to return to the surface will be brought up for an initial tasting in the spring of 2021. And let's not forget that this experiment is focused on a very particular wine: A Clos Triguedina Cahors, christened Cuvée Probus, which has been produced to honour the 130-year anniversary of the Padirac Chasm.

Surprisingly enough, this new approach to maturing wine was initially inspired by a find at sea. In 2010, divers in the Baltic discovered a wreck containing what turned out to be a cargo of champagne, which was probably on its way to 1840s Russia.

The wave of experimentation that is now ongoing began when the bubbly, which was made by such houses as Veuve Clicquot, Heidsieck and the now defunct Juglar, was discovered to still be delicious after some 170 years under water.

In Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the French Basque country, winemaker Emmanuel Poirmeur has registered a patent for a process that involves vinifying wine in special vats at a depth of 15 metres under water. For its part, Leclerc-Briant set a record when it vinified one of its champagnes at a depth of 60 meters under the Atlantic in 2012, not surprisingly the vintage was christened "Abyss."

New In: June 2020 Beauty Favourites to Beat the Summer Heat

This month, we’re introducing our favourite newly launched products to add to your beauty arsenal. From your holy grail must-haves to the industry’s latest and greatest, explore our roundup of everything you’ve wanted to try, and other things you never knew you needed… until now.

Hot summer days are properly setting in, and whether you love or loathe the heat, a beauty switch-up is in order. From swapping in breezier skincare to adding a gentle daily exfoliant in the shower, or experimenting with new colours for the season; here’s our definitive list of our top shelf products this June.

Wildsmith

New kid on the block in the beauty department is Wildsmith, the British skincare brand focused on delivering high performance products using clinically proven bioactive plant ingredients. Developed in England and making its Hong Kong debut now, Wildsmith is the first on the market that is all about radical botany and a targeted delivery system. A favourite back in its hometown, and now here, the Active Repair Platinum Booster encapsulates oxygen which is the key ingredient that helps with the metabolic process of collagen productivity and healing purposes. The platinum delivery system uses a powerful peptide that penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin which produces elastin too. This booster is great for days when feeling dehydrated or tired, as it pumps and plumps the skin with hydration for an instant surge of nutrients to the skin.
HK$1,720/30ml

Valmont Microbiome Series

Microbiome science is the biggest thing in skincare since hyaluronic acid. Valmont’s new Primary collection has been formulated around pre- and probiotics to promote the balance of the skin’s ecosystem. Using “friendly” skin-nurturing bacteria, the skin is fuelled with nutrients that promote cell development which leads to rejuvenated skin. The collection includes an Initial Prepping Mist, Targeted Blemish Treatment, Initial Anti-redness Repairing Serum, Initial Shooting Cream and a Rich Replenishing Balm. Our go-to is the Prepping Mist, a spray that is suitable for all skin types and can be used throughout the day (pre, during and post-makeup). The result is a feeling of instant refresh, thanks to its formulation which promotes balance in the hydrolipidic film on the skin and intercellular cement to trap hydration within the skin.
Primary Veil (Initial Prepping Mist) HK$880/150ml
Primary Solution (Targeted Blemish Treatment) HK$1,380/20ml
Primary Serum (Initial Anti-redness Repairing Serum) HK$1,540/30ml
Primary Cream (Initial Soothing Cream) HK$1,500/50ml
Primary Promade (Rich Replenishing Balm) HK$1,980/50ml

L'Occitane Shampoo & Conditioner

The worst hair season is upon us. Weighted down and clumped up by humidity, good hair days seem like a distant memory and are now months away. Though we are still on the lifelong quest to find that miracle product, L’Occitane’s Almond Shampoo and Conditioner doesn't do too badly. In fact, it is one of our most recent favourites. The scent is fresh, it cleanses the hair and scalp while leaving a sense of light and airy freshness, and most importantly, leaves the hair easy to comb either wet or dry. The almond oil component is a natural hair detangler, making fried and frizzled hair smoother and easier to manage.
Almond Shampoo HK$180/240ml
Almond Conditioner HK$190/240ml

La Prairie Concealer

Another product straight out of the Skin Caviar Complexion Lab Atelier (where all the caviar magic happens at La Prairie) is new Skin Caviar Perfect Concealer. Infused with caviar water and caviar extract for its lifting and firming properties, the serum-based formula nourishes the skin while offering the right amount of coverage. It comes with two interchangeable applicators – a cooling metal tip ring for a light massage to rid under-eye puffiness and a round-edge brush that can conceal by reaching all surfaces from any angle.
HK$1,470/6ml

Dior Hydra Life Matte Dew Hydration Sorbet Droplet Emulsion

To beat the summer heat, hydration is key. Dior’s answer is a concoction that combines three key actions for healthy, plump skin: hydration boost, mattifying finish and deep treatment. Using its Nobel-winning discovery of Aquaprins, Dior Science has extracted the essential proteins in Anjou to help play the role of “channels” in the skin, enabling water to circulate fluidly from one cell to another. Freshen up anytime of the day with velvety formula which not only delivers hydration, but absorbs excess sebum to keep oil and shine at bay.
HK$550/50ml

Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation SPF15 / PA+++

Clarins’ best-selling Extra-Firming Cream has pretty much claimed top-shelf status since its launch two years back. Using the formula as a base, Clarins has developed a foundation to go with it, the Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation SPF15/PA+++. Fortified with plant extracts such as chicory and red jania to tighten and lift, the foundation acts as part makeup and part skincare. The pink pear particles and soft-focus powders also help to create a luminous veil that is said to last all day even in the sun. Under extreme and unforgiving sunlight, dark spots and imperfections can also be concealed and blurred while the anti-pollution complex protects against environmental stressors.
HK$380/30ml

Benefit California Kissin' Colour Balm

We have been shielded behind our surgical masks for some time now, but with restrictions finally loosening up we can finally (or at least, begin to) revert back to the good old days. Fulfilling the need for hydration and colour this season, Benefit's new lip balm comes in a burst of 12 vibrant shades for summer fun. Extremely lightweight and hydrating thanks to loofah seed oil, the lips are nourished and hydrated for hours. One layer gives a natural-looking sheen, but when layered, can appear to be almost as pigmented as lipstick itself (without the drying effect). Personally, I’m enjoying the berry tone that adds a touch of colour while still appearing very natural and light.
HK$190/10g

Aveda Cherry Almond Body Scrub

There’s no getting around sweat and grime in the peak of summer and with that, exfoliation needs to be thorough and frequent. Aveda’s new Cherry Almond Body Scrub is the shower essential for these long, hot days. It does its job by removing dead skin cells while conditioning, smoothing and softening the skin. A mixture of fruity and floral sweetness, the playful aroma is a bright and fresh scent that’s very season-appropriate. What’s more, it uses 38 pure flower and plant essences and is cruelty-free, so you’re doing something good for the environment and your own wellbeing all at the same time.
HK$$340/200ml
