Humidity is, and has always been, a big part of the Hong Kong identity. But certainly it’s August when you feel its effects the most. And if fighting for clear skin in this climate isn’t a tough enough uphill battle already, we’ve got our face masks to kick up the difficulty a notch. That being said, it’s time to swap in breezy skincare, lightweight coverups, fresh scents and even a little bit of nail colour to lift our spirits and keep our beauty game on top.

Valmont’s Primary Collection Opens Us up to the Brave New World of Microbiome

Swiss Skincare specialist Valmont attempts to answer all of the problems within the skin's ecosystem with its primary collection. We explore the five newly launched skin savers.

he growing obsession with wellness has mutated from what was once a craze to what we now consider as part of our daily lifestyle. From plant-based diets and beauty supplements to clean and green beauty brands, the unstoppable wellness train has done us good. And the word around town right now is probiotics – the gut-healthy factor has gone beyond the digestive system to our skincare.

Just as we’ve grown to embrace the benefits of good bacteria for ourgut, so have brands. And with that, more and more of them have adopted the same microbiome science (balancing the skin’s ecosystem) to better the quality of skin. A strong advocate of the cause is the Swiss luxury skincare specialist Valmont.

Valmont’s latest future-facing collection leads the pack when it comes to microbiome advancement for beauty. It’s newly formulated product line, Primary is a collection designed to promote the stability of the skin’s ecosystem using pro- and prebiotics.

[caption id="attachment_208440" align="alignnone" width="1078"] Valmont's full Primary skincare collection[/caption]

Comprising five products to be used alone or together, Primary is food for the skin. Just as in traditional Chinese medicine or homeopathy, the concept is all about balance. For Valmont, that means infusing good bacteria into our routine. These peacekeeping elements maintain the skin’s pH at an optimal level by breaking down irritants and converting the molecules into healthy good bacteria byproducts that feed the skin.

Using ultra-high-temperature (UHT) sterilisation, every Primary product is contamination free. The process eliminates all microorganisms, leaving the product entirely natural and allowing us to reap maximum benefit.

Valmont’s new collection covers all microbiome skin needs. Its Primary Veil is an everyday prepping mist that’s so light and airy the skin feels refreshed without any hint of residue. Considered the breakfast smoothie for the skin, the probiotic formula wakes it up with a boost of energy. Infused with jojoba esters to restore the intercellular cement skin damage and lithium-rich Swiss thermal-spring water to soothe inflammation, the skin is reinforced and ready to face the day.

For the times when the skin is tired and the immune system is falling behind, the Primary Serum is here to the rescue. The anti-redness repairing serum regulates the microcirculation of the skin and re-tones dilated capillaries (so long, rosacea and flushed cheeks). While tending to the matte of redness, it also features restorative agents that strengthen the barrier function, meaning there’s only the slimmest possibility that reoccurring redness will return to haunt you.

For mornings or afternoons, the Primary Cream protects and preserves. The next step from the Primary Serum, the Cream replaces irritation with calmness and provides a surge of provitamin B5 to the epidermis and ups the skin’s flora for even greater barrier defence.

No matter how hard we try to avoid it, the skin inevitably has its dry, exhausted or vulnerable days when we need to handle it with care. Using passionfruit unsaponifiables, mimosa wax, shea butter, carrot and primrose oil, Valmont’s Primary Pomade is the extraindulgent TLC for when our skin feels helpless. The exact opposite of heavy skin butters, Primary Pomade is delightfully light yet powerfully hydrating. By mimicking the intercellular layers of the skin, it’s able to penetrate into the depths of the epidermis to comfort and nourish it from the inside out.

Primary was so thoughtfully designed that it even has a product for the occasional spot. Sloughing away the dead skin cell buildup, Primary Solution treats special areas of concern. Dry patch or zit, treat targeted problem zones to reregulate the pH again.

New In: June 2020 Beauty Favourites to Beat the Summer Heat

This month, we’re introducing our favourite newly launched products to add to your beauty arsenal. From your holy grail must-haves to the industry’s latest and greatest, explore our roundup of everything you’ve wanted to try, and other things you never knew you needed… until now.

Hot summer days are properly setting in, and whether you love or loathe the heat, a beauty switch-up is in order. From swapping in breezier skincare to adding a gentle daily exfoliant in the shower, or experimenting with new colours for the season; here’s our definitive list of our top shelf products this June.

Wildsmith

New kid on the block in the beauty department is Wildsmith, the British skincare brand focused on delivering high performance products using clinically proven bioactive plant ingredients. Developed in England and making its Hong Kong debut now, Wildsmith is the first on the market that is all about radical botany and a targeted delivery system. A favourite back in its hometown, and now here, the Active Repair Platinum Booster encapsulates oxygen which is the key ingredient that helps with the metabolic process of collagen productivity and healing purposes. The platinum delivery system uses a powerful peptide that penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin which produces elastin too. This booster is great for days when feeling dehydrated or tired, as it pumps and plumps the skin with hydration for an instant surge of nutrients to the skin.
HK$1,720/30ml

Valmont Microbiome Series

Microbiome science is the biggest thing in skincare since hyaluronic acid. Valmont’s new Primary collection has been formulated around pre- and probiotics to promote the balance of the skin’s ecosystem. Using “friendly” skin-nurturing bacteria, the skin is fuelled with nutrients that promote cell development which leads to rejuvenated skin. The collection includes an Initial Prepping Mist, Targeted Blemish Treatment, Initial Anti-redness Repairing Serum, Initial Shooting Cream and a Rich Replenishing Balm. Our go-to is the Prepping Mist, a spray that is suitable for all skin types and can be used throughout the day (pre, during and post-makeup). The result is a feeling of instant refresh, thanks to its formulation which promotes balance in the hydrolipidic film on the skin and intercellular cement to trap hydration within the skin.
Primary Veil (Initial Prepping Mist) HK$880/150ml
Primary Solution (Targeted Blemish Treatment) HK$1,380/20ml
Primary Serum (Initial Anti-redness Repairing Serum) HK$1,540/30ml
Primary Cream (Initial Soothing Cream) HK$1,500/50ml
Primary Promade (Rich Replenishing Balm) HK$1,980/50ml

L'Occitane Shampoo & Conditioner

The worst hair season is upon us. Weighted down and clumped up by humidity, good hair days seem like a distant memory and are now months away. Though we are still on the lifelong quest to find that miracle product, L’Occitane’s Almond Shampoo and Conditioner doesn't do too badly. In fact, it is one of our most recent favourites. The scent is fresh, it cleanses the hair and scalp while leaving a sense of light and airy freshness, and most importantly, leaves the hair easy to comb either wet or dry. The almond oil component is a natural hair detangler, making fried and frizzled hair smoother and easier to manage.
Almond Shampoo HK$180/240ml
Almond Conditioner HK$190/240ml

La Prairie Concealer

Another product straight out of the Skin Caviar Complexion Lab Atelier (where all the caviar magic happens at La Prairie) is new Skin Caviar Perfect Concealer. Infused with caviar water and caviar extract for its lifting and firming properties, the serum-based formula nourishes the skin while offering the right amount of coverage. It comes with two interchangeable applicators – a cooling metal tip ring for a light massage to rid under-eye puffiness and a round-edge brush that can conceal by reaching all surfaces from any angle.
HK$1,470/6ml

Dior Hydra Life Matte Dew Hydration Sorbet Droplet Emulsion

To beat the summer heat, hydration is key. Dior’s answer is a concoction that combines three key actions for healthy, plump skin: hydration boost, mattifying finish and deep treatment. Using its Nobel-winning discovery of Aquaprins, Dior Science has extracted the essential proteins in Anjou to help play the role of “channels” in the skin, enabling water to circulate fluidly from one cell to another. Freshen up anytime of the day with velvety formula which not only delivers hydration, but absorbs excess sebum to keep oil and shine at bay.
HK$550/50ml

Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation SPF15 / PA+++

Clarins’ best-selling Extra-Firming Cream has pretty much claimed top-shelf status since its launch two years back. Using the formula as a base, Clarins has developed a foundation to go with it, the Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation SPF15/PA+++. Fortified with plant extracts such as chicory and red jania to tighten and lift, the foundation acts as part makeup and part skincare. The pink pear particles and soft-focus powders also help to create a luminous veil that is said to last all day even in the sun. Under extreme and unforgiving sunlight, dark spots and imperfections can also be concealed and blurred while the anti-pollution complex protects against environmental stressors.
HK$380/30ml

Benefit California Kissin' Colour Balm

We have been shielded behind our surgical masks for some time now, but with restrictions finally loosening up we can finally (or at least, begin to) revert back to the good old days. Fulfilling the need for hydration and colour this season, Benefit's new lip balm comes in a burst of 12 vibrant shades for summer fun. Extremely lightweight and hydrating thanks to loofah seed oil, the lips are nourished and hydrated for hours. One layer gives a natural-looking sheen, but when layered, can appear to be almost as pigmented as lipstick itself (without the drying effect). Personally, I’m enjoying the berry tone that adds a touch of colour while still appearing very natural and light.
HK$190/10g

Aveda Cherry Almond Body Scrub

There’s no getting around sweat and grime in the peak of summer and with that, exfoliation needs to be thorough and frequent. Aveda’s new Cherry Almond Body Scrub is the shower essential for these long, hot days. It does its job by removing dead skin cells while conditioning, smoothing and softening the skin. A mixture of fruity and floral sweetness, the playful aroma is a bright and fresh scent that’s very season-appropriate. What’s more, it uses 38 pure flower and plant essences and is cruelty-free, so you’re doing something good for the environment and your own wellbeing all at the same time.
HK$$340/200ml

The Beauty Products We Loved This Year

We reveal our favourite beauty discoveries of the past year -- find out what our go-to skincare brands are, make-up we never leave home without, where you'll find us when we're in need of a luxurious spa treatment, and what 2020 launches we're excited about.

Favourite Treatment

Chantecaille's Rose de Mai Signature Facial is a big drink of goodness to quench your skin's thirst. Every visit is an opportunity to catch up on zzzs and I wake up to plumped, glowy skin. Plus, the delicate scent is reason itself to love this treatment.

Favourite Make-up Brand

Walking into Charlotte Tilbury makes me feel like a kid at a candy shop. The legendary makeup artist is the queen of colour. Her glamorous eyeshadow palettes are highly pigmented and easily blendable and buildable. To top it all, all her products are so beautiful in her signature modern-boudoir packaging.

Make-up item I can't live without...

Having gone under the knife earlier this year (and by that, I mean microblading), I was ready to shake my brow make-up dependency. But shu uemura hard formula pencil (a combination of powder, wax and semi-solid oil; HK$200) will always have a spot on my top shelf. I still use it when I want extra definition.

Beauty product I'm always hoarding

Masks. Be they sheet, mud, gel, peel-off or sleep. Following any masking routine, my skin feels fresh and renewed. My top-shelf products I use on rotation include WEI's Lotus Blossom Thirst Relief Sheet Mask (HK$430/6 sheets), Apivita's Prickly Pear Moisturising & Soothing Mask (HK$245) and Fresh's Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask (HK$490).

Favourite beauty hack I learned

A post shared by TATCHA Beauty (@tatcha) on

I've started to exfoliate once or twice a week after workouts. Sweat opens your pores so you can get a deeper cleanse and rid all impurities this way. I can control the cleanse with Tatcha's The Rice Polish Calming (HK$600) and add more or less water depending on the exfoliation I need.

Favourite overall beauty discovery

A post shared by Valmont Official Account (@valmontcosmetics) on

So much has launched in 2019. But my favourite find has to be the Valmont Teint Majestuex Satin Glow Foundation (HK$1,650). What I love most about it is that it's a hybrid between make-up and skincare offering a glowy satin-like finish without drying out the skin. It also works great with the Poudre de Teint Précieuse compact powder (HK$1,380) when I need to touch up on too much shine.

Brand I'll always be loyal to

When it comes to Canvas, I can find no fault. All its products are at least 90 percent natural and organic, so I can rest easy knowing they won't irritate my very sensitive skin. I'm especially fond of the Rose Otto collection.

Favourite skincare product

A post shared by Sunday Riley (@sundayriley) on

Depending on when you ask me this, my answer will probably change. But I'm currently obsessing over Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil (HK$450). A winning combo of retinol and blue tansy, the oil works through the night to reduce fine lines, the appearance of pores and redness. I also like that the formula is grease-proof and absorbs into your skin (rather than your pillowcase).

Favourite haircare product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ghd Hong Kong (@ghdhairhk) on

I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of negligence when it comes to my hair. I find a good quality hairdryer is more than half the battle. The ghd Air Hairdryer is fast-drying, controls frizz and ives my fine lifeless hair a boost of volume.

Favourite beauty personality I met this year

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Angela Caglia Skincare (@angelacagliaskincare) on

Meeting Angela Caglia during her visit for her brand's launch at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong was rather memorable. She's made a name for herself by creating such beautiful, easy-to-use and effective tools. I've been hearing about her for some time now, so finally meeting her face-to-face and trying out her line was a real treat.

Favourite beauty device

Face massages helps to stimulate collagen production, plus it's relaxing when you're just sitting in front of the TV or computer. Frame Cosmetics has a Thermal Vibration Face Massaging Device (HK$4,680), which has a heating and cooling effect on top of a pulsating function that's said to help penetrate serums into deeper layers of the skin. All it takes is about 10 minutes and you've got yourself a mini at-home facial.

Favourite beauty-related social media to follow

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gelcream (@gelcream) on

@gelcream posts the most beautiful product shots and honest reviews about new products. The only downside is that it will guarantee Instaenvy. Everything you find here will somehow make its way on to your wish list.

Favourite Fragrance

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gucci (@gucci) on

I've always been a sucker or oral fragrances and my current favourite is Gucci Bloom Acqua Di Fiori (HK$1,040). The white-floral bouquet scent reminds me of fresh cut flowers without the overpowering sweetness, thanks to its earthy undertones.

Favourite Bodycare Product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Aesop (@aesopskincare) on

I would recommend the Aesop body range to anyone regardless of their skin type. The cleansers are gentle on the skin thanks to the nourishing botanical ingredients and are suitable year-round. Its Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser (HK$325) and Body Scrub (HK$260) are my top choices -- the fresh pine-needle and sage scent really wakes me up.

The next product I can't wait to get my hands on

A post shared by Augustinus Bader (@augustinusbader) on

It would be impossible for me to list them all as there are so many products on my wish list! But I will say that I've been eyeing the 111Skin Rose Gold Radiance Booster (HK$895) and any of its masks for some time now. If it's good enough for Margot Robbie, Kim Kardashian and Priyanka Chopra, I can live with it. I've also heard some great things about the Dr Barbara Sturm Calming Serum (HK$1,930) and Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader (HK$2,100) that I wouldn't mind trying out too.

Beauty Awards 2019: VALMONT’s Winning Skincare

When we were tasked to go through hundreds and hundreds of products to find the ultimate best ones for this year’s Prestige Beauty and Wellness Awards, we all had in mind a few names that we thought would make the cut based off of each editor’s personal routine. For most, VALMONT was definitely in mind. So when the Swiss brand took home not one, but two awards, it didn’t exactly come as a surprise considering how consistent and deserving their products are.

Morning Skincare Winner: The Eye Balm

Nowadays it’s not enough to slap on some moisturiser and call it a day, at least if your goal is to prevent wrinkles and loss of firmness for as long as possible. So after prepping the under eye area with a lightweight serum, your next step should be the VALMONT V-Shape Filling Eye Balm. The balm has a non-greasy and non-sticky texture that belies its ultra-concentrated formula. It works to firm the skin around the eyes while reducing unsightly bags, puffiness and drooping eyelids. Over time it also strengthens and densifies the skin and its “dermal extracellular matrix”. All that and it feels good too.

[caption id="attachment_156445" align="alignnone" width="2480"] VALMONT V-Shape Filling series restores density to the skin while its V-Line Lifting series smooths and plumps wrinkles. They can be used separately or combined to target specific needs. (HK$1,880)[/caption]

Evening Routine Winner: The Eye Makeup Remover

It’s the cardinal rule of skincare: don’t go to bed without removing your make-up and washing your face. But how many times have we done just that and woken up to streaks of eye shadow and flakes of mascara on our cheeks and pillow? Well, not anymore, thanks to this new eye make-up remover from a storied Swiss brand. VALMONT Bi-falls, part of the Purity collection of cleansing products launched in March, has a unique non-oily formula that targets even the most stubborn waterproof make-up while protecting and softening the skin around the eyes. And another bonus? The 60ml bottle fits in our carry-on, so we can go all-out glam on our holidays and not have a streaky face to show for it later. evalmont.com.hk

[caption id="attachment_156494" align="alignnone" width="2126"] VALMONT Bi-Falls (HK$500)[/caption]

Special mention: THE SPA by VALMONT at Lee Garden

When it comes to delivering the very best, VALMONT has gone beyond just gracing the world with their products. The opening of THE SPA by VALMONT was a way to bring service and information to its customers. VALMONT’s philosophy has always been to integrate both art and beauty together, and this is apparent from the moment you first set foot inside the sanctuary in Causeway Bay. Hanging all parts of the space are chandeliers, glass sculptures and contemporary paintings. All sorts of beauty treatments and facials are made available within the themed private VIP rooms, each thoughtfully designed to reflect the artistic visions of VALMONT. The spa menu boasts a huge range of treatments targeting specific needs, and all using award-winning VALMONT products, of course.

7 Steps To Achieve Glass Skin, The K-Beauty Comeback Trend for Summer

It’s no secret that we (and the rest of the world) look towards the beauty capital that is South Korea for our skin goals. And when the masters of skincare came up with the “glass skin” trend -- an almost translucent complexion and luminous glow that seems to radiate from within -- a few years back, we were hooked. This season, it's returned in a big way. After all, who doesn’t want a gleamingly clear, poreless, dewy complexion?

So for those of you that are ready to get on board, here’s our step-by-step guide to achieving glass skin:

1. Double Cleanse

It all starts with a clean canvas. Beautiful skin is healthy skin, so hygiene is top priority. Begin with an oil cleanser that dissolves away impurities and stubborn makeup. Valmont’s Wonder Falls is a cream-melt-to-oil formula and gets the job done without stripping your face of moisture. Part two involves a water-base product like Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Enzyme Cleanser that ensures any residue or oil from part one is taken care of. The powder format allows you to blend your own concentration depending on your skin’s condition and specific needs.

2. Mask

What Glass Skin requires is hydration. Be it sheet masks (Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask), wash off masks (Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask) or leave-in overnight masks (Laneige Water Sleeping Mask) — make sure to overindulge your skin with moisture, or better yet, drench your skin in nutrients for that luminous glow.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-408.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-409.jpg" right-caption="Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask" left-caption="Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask"]

3. Tone

Preferably choose something with a brightening element to it. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and Rose Water. Layer on Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner or Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Essence-in-Lotion so your skin can soak in all the moisture for that plump and supple look.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Fresh_RoseDHToner_seal-490.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-412.jpg" right-caption="Fresh Rose Toner" left-caption="Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Essence-in-Lotion"]

4. Moisturise

Moisturise lots! Unlike makeup, when it comes to moisturising, more reallyis more. Keep in all the goodness with a moisturiser that works for your skin type and your environment. Here in Hong Kong, you’re going to want a light formula (like First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream or Helena Rubinstein Prodigy Cellglow The Radiant Regenerating Cream) that won’t clog your pores. Remember you want glassy, not greasy.

[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-418.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-413.jpg" right-caption="First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream" left-caption="Helena Rubinstein The Radiant Regenerating Cream"]

5. Protect

Nothing damages the skin more than UV, regardless of the weatherman’s prediction for sunny, overcast or thunderstorm days. A good offence is a good defence so an SPF barrier is a must. For our climate, SPF50 is a good benchmark. Similar to your moisturiser, pick something airy like Derm Institute’s Cellular Brightening Daily Defense SPF50+ or Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion SPF 50+.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-411.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-410.jpg" right-caption="Derm Institute Cellular Brightening Daily Defense" left-caption="Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion"]

6. Colour correct

Be careful in what you select, as not all products are going to work for the glass look. Clearly, avoid any matte formulas, and turn to water-based formulas such as NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. A play on light can help to accentuate the glow, so an illuminating highlighter (like Charlotte Tilbury’s Goldgasm) on the cheekbones, brow bone and cupid’s bow can amplify the glossy glow.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-415.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-414.jpg" right-caption="Charlotte Tilbury Goldgasm" left-caption="NARS Sheer Glow Foundation"]

7. Mist

For an extra boost (and a lot of sheen), seal in everything with a facial mist. This is also going to be your skin’s pick-me-up throughout the day, so keep a small bottle ready for when the slightest signs of dulling begin to appear (Aesop’s Immediate Moisture Facial Mist or Estée Lauder Micro Essence Aquaceutical Mist).
