Travel the World with These 6 Fragrances
Adapting to our current travel-less lives, we follow our noses to cure our wanderlust withdrawals.
With the loss of freedom to explore the globe, we turn to fragrances to transport us to faraway paradises and exotic locales. From the zesty notes of Sicily to the spicy aromas of Jaipur or the musky tones of Nairobi, we take a trip around the world through our olfactory senses that remind us of the distant destinations on our travel bucket list – even if only for a moment.
Capri, Italy
[caption id="attachment_207014" align="alignnone" width="1733"] HK$1,255/150ml; HK$840/75ml[/caption]
While we could all do with a drop into beautiful Capri during any time of the year, there is nothing quite like summer on the island off the Sorrento Peninsula. Envision yourself sailing away on incredible waters with the relaxing and bright scent Arancia di Capri by Acqua di Parma characterised with radiant top notes of zesty orange, mandarin and lemon fused with a heart of cardamom and finally rounded off with a touch of caramel and musk. Fruity and sunny, this EDT captures the essence of a relaxing Italian Mediterranean vacation.
Ibiza, Spain

Jonathan Anderson shares the same pain of being locked down and locked in. So in “an aide-mémoire of better times to come,” the Loewe creative director partners with legendary boutique Paula’s Ibiza in a collaboration to bring back fond teenage memories spent on the Balearic island in the midst of summer. Coconut water is layered with bright green galbanum and mandarin oils, driftwood, sand lily and frangipani flowers that nod to the tropical Bohemia vibes inherent to Ibiza. Even the candy coloured gradient bottle of Loewe Paula’s Ibiza is reminiscent of summer sunsets.
Palm Springs, USA
[caption id="attachment_207010" align="alignnone" width="1799"] HK$1,050/75ml; HK$860/50ml; HK$595/30ml[/caption]
The name says it all – Nomade by Chloé is all about voyages, exploration and freedom. Envision the sun reflecting on the sand in the heart of the deep desert dunes of Palm Springs in a landscape of colours. Borrowing references from men’s cologne, Nomade combines warm oak moss and soft sandalwood with sweet Mirabelle plum and velvety davana, to create a new intoxicating, sensuous scent for spring which brings memories and dreams of a place in the sun.
Morocco, Africa
[caption id="attachment_207017" align="alignnone" width="1824"] HK$1,850/100ml; HK$1,300/50ml[/caption]
An ode to the fantastical journeys taken by Ben Groham’s father, the founder of Byredo created Bal d’Afrique: a scent to celebrate his vision of African culture and its influence. He visits the land of the Sahara through his infatuation for the continent and blends notes of bergamot, neroli, black amber, Moroccan cedar wood and African marigold to encapsulate the cultures shaped by the art, music, dance and way of life that he relives through the diaries of his father. We can all use a little imagination and save on flight time for a quick excursion to Africa.
Jaipur, India

India’s royal and spiritual splendour meet in Creed’s Original Santal. The romance and opulence of India has captured the attention of Oliver Creed, who then took the nation’s signature Mysore Sandalwood as the core of his fragrance. The majestic allure comes from the powerful aromas of orange tree, ginger, lemon, rosemary, peppermint, pinkberries, cedar and vanilla. Warm and robust with just a hint of spice, just like south Asia, it captures you at first and leaves you wanting to discover more.
Lake Biwa, Japan
Taking Charlotte Perriand’s passion for extensive travels, egalitarianism, a love for the wild outdoors and modernism, Aesop’s latest fragrance Rōzu is a reference to a blend of the creative muse’s lifelong affections including her love for Japan. Appealing to both genders, the fragrance opens with rich floral notes of rose, petitgrain, bergamot, shiso and pink pepper; while the heart is composed of headier florals such as ylang ylang, jasmine and guaiacwood, with hints of sandalwood, vertiver, patchouli and myrrh to end. Find yourself wandering through a Wabara rose garden off the shores of Lake Biwa by Kyoto with just a spritz.

Loewe Paula’s Ibiza Collection is a Visual Feast of Summer Staples
Jonathan Anderson gets personal with the new Loewe Paula’s Ibiza collection, now available at Lane Crawford and on Loewe.com.
Loewe’s fourth collaboration with the legendary Ibiza boutique Paula’s reaches a turning point as it now offers a full-fledged collection for men and women, complete with ready-to-wear, accessories and a new fragrance.
“Ibiza has always been very dear and very personal to me: It’s my deepest tie with Spain, harking back to childhood and adolescence memories,” shares creative director Jonathan Anderson, who highlights the new collection with the kaleidoscopic nature-inspired motifs created by Paula’s founders, Armin Heinemann and Stuart Rudnick. The prints star mystical mermaids among red corals, while Jikin goldfish frolic among waterlilies.

Through this visual feast, and the off-duty ease of the classic summer staples, Anderson hopes to tap on the breezy spirit of the Balearics. The collaboration also celebrates the time when hedonism of these islands influenced subcultures across the world, as expressed in the “part rave, part cyberdog” segment of the collection that includes reflective silver trousers, spiky tops and day-glo sandals. “I’ve always said that Paula’s Ibiza embodies the spirit of letting go,” Anderson muses.
Alongside an array of playful accessories — think leather mini bags in the shape of octopuses, dolphins and whales — the partnership has debuted a unisex fragrance distinguished by opposing notes of warm ambergris and fresh coconut water. Anderson calls it “escapism, bottled.”

Originally slated for an earlier release, the new range has adopted a personal tone as he takes stock of the global pandemic. Before he introduces the collection in the press release, he added a thoughtful letter. The note reads:
“Dear reader,
Wherever you are, I hope this missive finds you well.
I know this is not exactly the ideal time to launch products, but this is a project all the craftspeople at Loewe have been lovingly working on for some time, giving life to objects that are exquisitely lively and optimistic — as craft always is.
This is a happy, undeniably escapist collection, conveyed through colourful and energetic images, and I thought it might cheer you up. As a visual feast, probably, or an aide-mémoire of better times to come. I’ll be happy for you to enjoy it, quite simply and very spontaneously.
I hope you and your family are safe.”

Craft is the heart and soul of Loewe. For the bags in this collection, communities of artisans used specialist handcraft techniques and naturally-occurring materials. A specially-designed sickle is used to cut palm fronds that are later sun-dried, before being braided into classic baskets using the Ilata technique, a traditional weaving style that originated on the Balearic islands.
Another example weaves wild reeds on traditional looms, fine cabuya thread derived from the agave cactus plant is spun, dyed in multi-colour sunset hues, and woven into shigra patterns — a unique signature of indigenous communities in Ecuador — to create the squared basket designs.
Anderson hopes the products will uplift spirits in more ways than one — your purchase is a pick-you-up that not only shows support for these artisans, it also helps to ensure a better future for children in socially vulnerable groups affected by the ongoing pandemic. Loewe will be donating €40 (HK$340) to educational projects for every product sold in this collection between May and August 2020, starting with an initial donation of €500,000 (HK$4.2 million).
The Spanish fashion house’s efforts extend to the donation of 100,000 surgical masks to the Spanish Red Cross. At the same time, it is producing non-surgical masks in its Getafe factory to be distributed to volunteer workers, Loewe employees and their families.

Fashion Houses Bring People Together Through Social Media During COVID-19
When you’ve finished that home workout routine and that book you’ve been meaning to read, it’s natural to feel at a loss of things to do while trapped at home. But fear not, major fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Valentino and Gucci all have something special to offer – from art to music, to podcasts and more.
Previously, you’ve read about Bottega Veneta’s Virtual Creatives platform, Bottega Residency. Similarly, Alexander McQueen has unveiled “McQueen Creators,” a new social media project that encourages followers to engage artistically with their favourite Alexander McQueen pieces. The creative theme changes each week and includes digital tutorials from the brand’s teams and collaborators. So far, there’s been 3-D creation to home-embroidery, with its most recent project encouraging followers to illustrate silhouettes from Alexander McQueen’s spring/summer 2020 womenswear and fall/winter 2020 menswear collections. For that, McQueen collaborated with artist Howard Tangye in order for him to share his drawing and painting techniques on film to inspired participants.

Loewe has come to the rescue for art lovers who haven’t been able to visit galleries and museums during their stay at home period. Its “En Casa” initiative, a series of online workshops, tours and events, will be streamed through Instagram live on weeknights and weekends, uniting previous artistic collaborators of the brand and finalists of the Loewe Craft Prize to celebrate artistic expression.

Gucci, on the other hand, has collaborated with The Sex Ed, a sexual wellness podcast, for an exclusive episode featuring the house’s creative director Alessandro Michele and podcast founder, Liz Goldwyn. Filmed in the Gucci Hub after the fall/winter 2020 womenswear show in Milan, Michele discusses “his erotic relationship to nature, why Rome is his mistress, moving beyond the confining modes of masculinity, his passion for dressing like a 1950s granny and how he channels orgasmic energy every day.” On top of this, the brand has also started a new initiative called #GucciCommunity, which encourages followers to donate to the Covid-19 Solidarity Fund and saw musicians and artists contribute to the Gucci Instagram feed in order to start the ball rolling.

Valentino has also created a hashtag #ChezMaisonValentino for its new series of performances that is streamed on their Instagram live. First to take place was Alicia Keys, who treated followers to soulful live renditions while poet Rupi Kapur was the most recent guest to perform. Anya Hindmarch has also launched a series of "Labelled Workshops" that the brand will stream on Instagram live featuring industry experts to help "de-clutter and organise your home, your inbox and your imagery."
